TOURNAMENT PREVIEW: SEC Championship

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The No. 17 Texas A&M Aggies battle for the conference title at the SEC Men's Golf Championship starting Wednesday at Sea Island Golf Club.
This marks the ninth consecutive time the SEC Championship plays on Sea Island Golf Club's par-70, 7,005-yard Seaside Course. The tournament opens with three rounds of stroke play Wednesday toFriday. The top eight teams advance to match play with the quarterfinals and semifinals contested Saturday and the championship round played Sunday.
For the seventh straight year, the final match play round will be televised on SEC Network. The semifinal round streams on SEC Network +.
The Aggies enter the fray slotted No. 21 the Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches Poll and No. 17 Scoreboard College Golf Rankings powered by Clipped. The Aggies are locked, loaded and ready to compete fresh off their team title at The Aggie Invitational.
The field is loaded with 10 teams slotted in the top 20 of the Clippd rankings, including six of the top eight teams. Thirteen of the 16 teams are ranked in the top 35.
Texas A&M has penciled in a formidable lineup, including Phichaksn Maichon who sports two tournament wins this season at the Sea Best invitational and his recent victory at the the Aggie Invitational. Maichon is joined by Wheaton Ennis, Michael Heidelbaugh, Jaime Montojo and Aaron Pounds in Wednesday's starting lineup. Vishnu Sadagopan is also at the tournament available as a reserve.
The Aggies are looking for their first SEC Championship, finishing as runner-up in both 2016 – the last year of stroke play determining the champion – and 2017 – the first year of match play deciding the victor. Texas A&M has advanced to the bracket all se years the tournament has included match play, including making the semifinal round in each of the last five championships.
Wednesday's tee times for the Aggies start at 7:00 a.m. Ol' Sarge's charges are paired with Alabama and Vanderbilt for the first round.

The SEC Championship has been contested on the Sea Island Golf Club's Seaside Course from 2001-07, 2010-25.

The Seaside Course was totally reconfigured by Tom Fazio and reopened in October 1999. The new Seaside Course is the brilliant blending of Colt & Allison's original nine-hole Seaside and Joe Lee's Marshside nine into one seamless, contemporary 18-hole golf course. Tidal creeks, dunes, saltmarshes, and St. Simons Sound frame the course which plays fast, firm and fun in the tradition of legendary Scottish links.
