Aggies Earn Spot in SEC Championship Title Match
Apr 26, 2025 | Men's Golf
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The No. 16 Texas A&M Aggies registered wins over Georgia and No. 14 Alabama in Saturday's match play action at the SEC Championship to earn a spot in Sunday's title contest at Sea Island Golf Club.
The Maroon & White triumphed over the Bulldogs, 4-1, in the morning to earn a place in the semifinal round for the fifth consecutive season. The test was tougher in the afternoon with the Aggies prevailing over the Crimson Tide, 3-2, with freshman Wheaton Ennis needing 19 holes for the clincher.
Ol' Sarge's charges square off against No. 8 Florida in Sunday's title match. The round tees off at 7 a.m. with coverage on SEC Network.
Texas A&M will play in the SEC Championship match for the second time in the eight seasons the league has used an eight-team match play bracket with the other appearance coming in 2017. The Aggies' last league title came in 2012 in their final season in the Big 12.
Ennis and Michael Heidelbaugh were each winners in both their matches. The rest of the lineup picked up one victory apiece, including Jaime Montojo and Phichaksn Maichon against Georgia and Aaron Pounds versus Alabama.
With the teams starting the morning matches on the Seaside Course's No. 10, Ennis dismantled Georgia's Grayson Wood, 6&5, to pounce on the Bulldogs. He built a 4UP lead by the turn and won two of the next four holes to end it.
Heidelbaugh checked in with a 3&2 victory over Connor Loflin. They see-sawed on the first nine holes with the Aggie claiming No. 1 and No. 3 to build a three-hole margin he wouldn't relinquish.
Georgia's James Earle won his match against Aaron Pounds after trailing for much of the contest. Earle knotted it with five holes to go and pulled ahead with two remaining for the 1UP win.
Montojo clinched the match after lagging for the first 14 holes. He fell back three after five holes. The Madrid, Spain, native clawed back into the match, tying it on No. 6 and claiming an advantage the very next hole. He halved the next two to claim a 1UP victory.
Maichon tacked on the final point in a match he wrangled control of midway through the first nine holes. He dropped the opening hole but tied it on No. 12 and pulled ahead on No. 14. He would not lose a hole the remainder of the match to win 4&3.
Texas A&M pulled off a gritty performance to top the Crimson Tide. The last two Aggies to record wins, Pounds and Ennis, led after just seven of their combined 37 holes.
Alabama held a 3-1-1 lead after each of the teams made the turn after No. 9. The Crimson Tide's Dominic Clemons closed out Montojo, 5&4 to claim the early advantage.
Heidelbaugh never trailed in his match against Connor Brown, but it was tied after five different holes, including Nos. 11 and 12. The Dallas, Texas, native birdied No. 13 and No. 15 to earn the 2&1 triumph.
Pounds pulled the Aggies ahead winning against Nick Gross in a match that nobody led by more than one stroke until the 16th hole. The contest was tied from Nos. 7-14 before Gross bogeyed No. 15 and Pounds birdied No. 16, eventually winning 2UP.
Georgia's Jones Free built a two-hole lead over Maichon after 10 holes. The Aggie was able to cut the deficit to one the next hole, but Free prevailed on No. 12 and they halved the next five holes, evening the match at 2-2.
In the deciding match, Ennis fell into a substantial hole early with Alabama's Jonathan Griz 3UP after six holes. The Eagle, Idaho, product shaved the margin, carrying the day on Nos. 8, 11 and 12. He earned his first lead of the match with a birdie on No. 14. Griz bounced right back with an equalizer on No. 16. They matched wits the next three holes, including matching mid-range putts for birdies on No. 17. Ennis finally prevailed on the 19th hole as Griz conceded after his sixth stroke overshot the pin.

On getting contributions from everybody...
"We worked hard for this. These guys work hard for it. They were there for the fight today and they were ready for it. We played two great teams. The SEC is just an absolute gauntlet, so I'm proud of the guys. They fought tooth and nail. They knew it was going to be a rock fight today and they were ready for it. I couldn't be more proud of how they came together today and got the job done."
On the guys who scored in both matches, the fifth-year senior Michael Heidelbaugh and the freshman Wheaton Ennis..
"That's why they came here. They wanted to play for championships and we wanted them here to help us win championships. We're fortunate they're on our side. Mike is a steady influence on all of us. Wheaton is not shy about it. He wants to be in those moments. It was great to see."
On what the Aggies will face in Sunday's championship ...
"The Gators are experienced and they're deep. They're good and they're well coached. We're looki9ng forward to a battle. They'll be ready for us and we'll rest up and lace them up tomorrow. We'll be ready for another fight. You don't get to play for the big trophies that often, so they'll be ready to go."
