Apr 29, 2025 | Baseball
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M baseball team returned to the win column Tuesday night with a 13-6 midweek victory over Lamar at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
Ben Royo powered the offensive attack for the Aggies (25-19) as the junior went 2-for-3 with two homers and a career-high eight RBI. Caden Sorrell followed with a perfect 3-for-3 night to go along with a walk, two home runs and three RBI. Blake Binderup (2-for-4), Wyatt Henseler (2-for-4) and Kaeden Kent (3-for-5) rounded out the multi-hit performers on the night for the Maroon & White.
On the mound, Brad Rudis (1-1) earned the win after working four scoreless innings in relief. The senior also racked up two strikeouts and forced five groundouts on the night. Caden McCoy, who entered with the tying run on deck in the eighth, picked up his second save of the year after tossing 1 1/3 scoreless frames to go along with three strikeouts.
After the Cardinals (36-12) struck first in the second with an RBI double down the left field line, Royo responded for the Aggies in the third with a mammoth two-run home run down the left field line. The junior's seventh homer of the season left the bat at 103 mph and traveled 406 feet.
The Maroon & White stretched their lead to 4-1 in the fourth courtesy of a Royo sacrifice fly that scored Blake Binderup, who reached on a leadoff single.
In the fifth, Texas A&M broke the game open with a six-run frame as its lead bloomed to 9-1. Henseler led off the inning with a 375-foot solo homer to left center. The long ball marked the 10th of the season for the graduate student and traveled 375 feet.
With runners on the corner and one out, a throwing error by Lamar allowed Sorrell to cross the plate as the advantage grew to 5-1. Later in the frame, the Aggies loaded the bases for Royo, who delivered with a 412-foot grand slam to straightaway center field. The multi-homer game marked the second of the season for the junior and second of his career.
In the sixth, Sorrell pushed the lead to 10-1 with a monster solo shot off the batter's eye in center. The sophomore's eighth long ball of the year left the bat at 107 mph and traveled 436 feet.
After a five-run eighth from Lamar trimmed the lead to 10-6, Sorrell provided insurance in the bottom half with a two-run blast to center that traveled 403 feet. The multi-homer game marked the second of the season for the sophomore and third of his career.
Later in the frame, Royo pushed across the final run of the night with a two-out, bases-loaded RBI walk. In the ninth, McCoy retired the Cardinals in order to secure the 13-6 victory.
