No. 2 Aggies Defeated UCSB, 4-1, to Advance to The Sweet Sixteen
May 03, 2025 | Women's Tennis
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The No. 2 Texas A&M women's tennis team took down the UCSB Gauchos in a competitive match, 4-1, Saturday in NCAA Tournament second round play at Mitchell Tennis Center.
The Aggies host UCLA in the Super Regionals Friday, May 9th at 2 p.m.
In doubles, Nicole Khirin/Lucciana Perez shut out Marie Weissheim/Raphaelle Leroux, 6-0 on court 3. Minutes later, Lexington Reed/Daria Smetannikov topped Lucy Lu/Lily Pradkin, 6-2, on court 2 to capture the doubles point for the Aggies.
On court 5, No. 109 Smetannikov made quick work of Emma Tutoveanu, 6-3, 6-1, putting the Aggies up 2-0.
Looking to make an impact, Leroux defeated No. 51 Perez, 6-1, 6-3, on court 4, trimming the deficit to 2-1.
Continuing her weekend dominance, No. 13 Khirin closed out Marie Weissheim, 6-2, 6-4, on court 2 to bring the Aggies a point away from advancing to a sixth-straight Sweet Sixteen.
Reed came back to out-work Ali Benedetto, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, on court 6 to give Texas A&M its 70th-consecutive win at Mitchell.
Head Coach Mark Weaver
On the pressure of the match…
"I am pleased to advance to the Sweet 16. It's not easy to do. There is some extra pressure out there whether anyone wants to recognize that or not. I was very pleased that Lexington as a lone freshman was able to pull through there at the end. She did a good job at staying focused and getting across the finish line as a freshman to advance to the Sweet 16."
Weaver on the importance of the doubles point…
"The doubles were important, it was a dog fight out there. If we don't win the doubles point, that's even more of a dogfight out there than it was. I had switched the doubles teams, and had confidence in what we were doing. I was pleased with number 3 taking care of business and getting that 1-0 lead in the NCAA tournament goes a long way."
Freshman Lexington Reed
On clinching the match…
"That was big for me. I wish I could have finished in the second set, but to come back in the third like that was huge. To clinch the match really meant a lot to me because that was my first time."
On the grit of the team…
"We work so hard in practice and just compete every single match. We're just going to keep doing what we're doing."
