Aggies Run-Rule South Carolina, 12-4, to Advance to SEC Semifinals

ATHENS – The No. 2 seed Texas A&M softball team run-ruled No. 7 seed South Carolina, 12-4, in five innings to advance to the semifinal round of the SEC Tournament, Thursday night at Jack Turner Stadium.
Texas A&M (44-9) capitalized on South Carolina (40-15) mistakes as the Gamecocks recorded a season-high five errors and the Aggies hung crooked frames in the second, fourth and fifth innings. Mya Perez led the offense going 2-for-4, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 2 R, while KK Dement added four RBI and Kennedy Powell drove in a pair after a two-run home run for her first round tripper of the season. Emiley Kennedy moved to 20-4 after 5.0 innings of work and six strikeouts, while yielding four runs, four walks and four hits.
A&M spoiled a bases-loaded opportunity in the opening frame and yielded a run in the top of the second, before answering in the bottom half with a two-out rally and a pair of two-run home runs for a 4-1 lead. Facing an 0-2 count and two outs, Kelsey Mathis battled back to a full count and singled on the ninth pitch of the at-bat to keep the second inning alive. Powell followed with a first pitch blast towards the SEC TV set in right center to give A&M its first lead, 2-1. Wooley kept the two out rally alive with a bunt single and stole second before Mya Perez lasered a two-run oppo taco to add to the advantage, 4-1.
South Carolina added a solo shot in the third and scored another run in the fourth to cut into the Aggie lead, 4-3, while Kennedy ended each threat with an inning-ending punch out. Texas A&M added a pair of runs in the bottom half after Wooley reached on a throwing error to first as the speedster raced around to third. Perez grounded out to score Wooley, while Mac Barbara walked and was pinch ran for by Scout Lovell. Amari Harper reached on a fielder's choice as the ball traveled through the wickets of the Gamecock second baseman, while Lovell reached third base. Dement drove in Lovell on a fielder's choice to make it a 6-3 lead after the fourth.
The Gamecocks blasted their second solo homer to lead off the fifth, before the Maroon & White scored six runs on five hits and one error in the bottom half to end the game early, 12-4. Mathis led off with a single and advanced to second after Wooley singled on a bunt and the pair advanced 60 feet on a wild pitch. Perez drove the two pair home with a single to right field to double A&M's lead, 8-4. Barbara walked on four straight pitched and Harper singled up to the middle to load the bases with one out. Dement hit her team-leading 15th double to clear the bases as the Aggies were headed to run-rule territory, 11-4. Kramer Eschete reached on a fielding error as Dement sped around third and scored to score for the run-rule victory, 12-4.

- Kennedy Powell made her 155th career start and 110th in the Maroon & White. The junior finished 1-for-4, including her first home run of the season, a two-run shot. Powell scored her 57th run of the season, moving to sole possession of the fourth most runs scored in an individual season in A&M history.
- Mya Perez recorded her team-leading 19th multi-hit game and 19th multi-RBI game. The sophomore's five RBI is tied for the most in an SEC Tournament game in SEC history.
- Perez ranks second most in program history with 68 RBI in a season, trailing only four RBI of the school record held by Josie Carter in 1982.
- Emiley Kennedy recorded the 50th complete game of her career, while she became the first Aggie pitcher to win 20-plus games in consecutive seasons since Mel Dumezich in 2012 and 2013.
- The Aggie ace struck out six batters for her 557th career strikeouts, the seventh most in program history surpassing Missi Young (1990-92).
- Koko Wooley went 3-for-4 with three runs, while recording her 15th stolen base of the season. The senior moved into sole possession of the fifth most runs (164) scored in an Aggie career surpassing Cassie Tysarczyk (2011-14), while her 242 hits are four shy of tying Tori Vidales (2015-18) for the third most hits in an Aggie career.
- Freshman Kelsey Mathis made her third career start and second start in as many game. Mathis sparked the two-out rally in the second inning with a single to right field before finishing the night going 2-for-3 with two runs.
