Aggies Impress on Opening Day of Charlie Thomas Invitational

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M track & field team won four events and set three all-time marks on the opening day of the Charlie Thomas invitational Friday at the R.A. 'Murray' Fasken '38 Indoor Track & Field facility.
"This kind of meet we had today is exactly what we need," head coach Pat Henry said. "We had some individuals run some different events and we're seeing people keep getting a little better every week. We did have some standout performers on the day. I was very proud of Camryn [Dickson] who ran great in the 200m. I thought Sasha [Aleksandr Solovev] looked good, Auhmad [Robinson] also did a great job and Sofia [Yakushina] competed hard today and finished extremely well."
Camryn Dickson set the track ablaze in the women's 200m, as the senior climbed up to No. 2 in the A&M record book after crossing the line in 22.62. The mark was a personal best, meet record and ranks second in the nation this year. Anya Jackson and Aysha Shaheed also recorded top eight results, finishing fourth (23.33) and sixth (23.61), respectively. On the men's side Lawson Jacobs topped the Aggie contingent with a career-best mark of 20.68 and entered the record books at No. 11, while Blake Holland was fourth also with a best time of 20.98.
Sofia Yakushina headlined the Maroon & White's pentathlon group, finishing third overall and first among collegiate athletes with 4,336 points. The sophomore began her day with back-to-back fourth-place finishes in the 60m hurdles (8.50) and high jump (1.71m/5-7.25). She then finished 12th in the shot put (11.27m/36-11.75) before winning both the long jump (6.21m/20-4.5) and 800m (2:12.82) to conclude her day. Yakushina's mark ranks third overall in the country this year.
The 400m group also impressed, led by Auhmad Robinson on the men's side. The senior clocked a season-best mark of 45.58 top win the event and now ranks fourth in the NCAA this year. Robinson was followed by Kimar Farquharson in third (46.31) and Eric Hemphill III (46.62) in fourth. Jahnile Registre topped the Aggie women, finishing third overall and second among collegiate competitors with a time of 53.10. Three more members of the Maroon & White followed right behind Registre, as Tyler Lowe was fourth (53.16), Peace Nwaelehia was fifth (53.33) and Lacarthea Cooper was sixth (53.34).
Aleksandr Solovev captured the first event win of the day in the men's pole vault. The Moscow, Russia, native cleared a season-best bar of 5.60m/18-4.25 to earn his second title of the indoor season.
Blake Harris opened his heptathlon campaign on the front foot, accumulating 3,213 points to ranks second overall and first among collegiate athletes. He started the day in the 60m, winning the event with a career-best time of 6.83. He followed that up with second in the long jump (7.23m/23-8.75), fourth in the shot put with a personal best toss of 13.30m/43-7.75 and concluded day one with a clearance of 1.90m/6-2.75 in the high jump which was good for eighth.
The long jump groups landed podium finishes, as Micah Larry finished second with a leap of 7.52m/24-8.25 while Machaeda Linton followed suit in the women's event with a mark of 6.29m/20-7.75 which debuted her at No. 10 in A&M's record books.
Ava Cole recorded a second-place finish in her 5,000m collegiate debut with a time of 17:30.31. Aiden Gonzalez-Rodiles was fourth in the men's event in 14:24.28, while Noah Willows was close behind in sixth (14:32.06).
Etoro Bassey matched his collegiate best in the high jump with a clearance of 2.14m/7-0.25 which was good for second. Milena Chevallier was fourth in the women's event after tying her season best of 1.75m/5-8.75.
