AUGUSTA, Ga. – Texas A&M's Vanessa Borovilos turned in a bogey-free 6-under 66 in the first round of the Augusta National Women's Amateur Wednesday at the Champions Retreat Golf Club to put her into a tie for third.
Borovilos was one shot behind reigning NCAA Individual National Champion Maria Jose Marin of Arkansas and Soomin Oh of South Korea who were both sitting at 7-under 65. The Sophomore tees off at 8:44 a.m. from No. 10 to begin the second round.
Borovilos birdied all four par-5s on the course and added birdies on Nos. 4 and 15. The Canadian is looking to become the first golfer ever to win both the ANWA and Drive, Chip and Putt National Championship, having won the event in 2018 in the Girls 10-11 division.
Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio posted a 3-over 75 in the first round and stood tied for 57th. The junior will need to land within the top 30 in order to make the cut to advance to the final round at Augusta National Saturday. The current cut sits at 1-under 71.
Thursday's round is the last at Champions Retreat before the tournament heads over to Augusta National for a practice round Friday and the last 18 Saturday.
