Matt Callaway is in his ninth year as Athletics Communications Director after joining the Texas A&M athletic department in August of 2005. He was a part of the Athletics Compliance Staff for seven years prior to joining the Athletics Communications office. Currently, he serves as the primary media contact for the Aggie men’s and women's tennis programs as well as a secondary contact for football.
After transitioning to the communications office, Callaway was the primary contact for Texas A&M women’s basketball (2012-13) and women’s golf (2012-14). While working with the women’s basketball program, the Aggies captured the 2013 SEC Tournament Championship and saw Kelsey Bone drafted in the first round of the WNBA draft. The SEC Tournament title was Texas A&M’s first team championship in the league. He assisted with promotional efforts that saw multiple players garner All-Conference and All-Freshman selections along with Bone’s inclusion on various All-American lists.
Additionally, Callaway has assisted with football and men’s basketball duties for the past five seasons. He has assisted with football notes and media requests while also overseeing social media efforts for the athletic department for five years. While under his direction, the departmental social media account have seen impressive growth, highlighted by a 700% increase in followers on instagram, a 275% increase on the football facebook page and a 250% on the men’s basketball twitter account. While assisting with the promotion and media responsibilities with men’s basketball the Aggies advanced to the 2016 and 2018 Sweet Sixteen along with capturing the 2016 SEC Regular Season Title.
Callaway has been the primary contact for the Texas A&M men’s tennis team since the Spring of 2014. The program is in the midst of one of its most successful stretches in program history advancing to the NCAA semifinals, the ITA Indoor Team semifinals, the NCAA Elite Eight for the fifth time in program history along with 24 players garnering All-America honors. The Aggies have registered multiple All-SEC selections including back-to-back SEC Coach of the Year honors. The Maroon & White have etched their names on five SEC trophies, two SEC Tournament Championships and the 2015, 2017 and 2018 SEC Regular Season Championship. The 2018 squad became first team at Texas A&M to complete the SEC regular season undefeated since joining the league in 2012. While working with men’s tennis, Callaway has hosted the 2014 ITA Indoor All-American Championship, the 2015 SEC Men's Tennis Tournament and 2018 SEC Women's Tennis Tournament.
During his seven years within the compliance office, Callaway assisted with each of Texas A&M’s athletic programs. He worked with various areas of compliance including playing and practice seasons, countable athletic-related activities, official visit reviews, athletic camps, NCAA and conference eligibility reviews, transfer information, waivers and recruiting reviews.
The Spring, Texas, native graduated from Texas A&M in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology with a specialization in Sports Management and a minor in Business Administrations and is married to Charlene Callaway, the couple have one daughter, Julia Mae, born in February 2018.
