A standout two-sport athlete in baseball and football, Ellis was consdiered one of the most versatile players at A&M and was used on both the offensive and defensive sides of the football field. Ellis was a SWC leader in pass receptions, kick-off returns, minutes played, and was selected in 1953 as the All SWC quarterback. In 1952, he was a member of Collier magazine’s “Unsung Squad” and he was third in the nation in kick-off returns. In 1953, Ellis was selected as the football MVP and twice selected as the “Back of the Week” in the SWC. Successful on the baseball diamond as well, Ellis led his team in stolen bases in the 1953 and 1954 seasons. After his collegiate career, Ellis was drafted by the Baltimore Colts and the Hamilton Tiger Cats of the CFL in 1954.
