Cory Patton went 3-for-4 with two home runs and seven RBI, but it was not enough as No. 2 Texas defeated No. 9 Texas A&M, 12-9, before 7,368 at Olsen Field.
With the loss, the Aggies dropped to 38-17 overall and to 13-12 in Big 12 play. Texas, which clinched the Big 12 regular-season championship with the victory, improved to 48-10 and 19-6.
The Aggies wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as they touched Texas starting pitcher Sam LeCure for two runs in the bottom of the first. With one out, Cliff Pennington singled and Patton followed with a mammoth home run to left center to make the score 2-0.
Much like the night before, the Longhorns answered the call by scoring four runs in their next trip to the plate off A&M starter Zach Jackson. Robby Hudson plated a run with a RBI single and a single by J.D Reininger loaded the bases. Ryan Russ hit a chopper to Jackson's right and his attempted throw to the plate was wild, allowing Will Crouch to score. Drew Stubbs followed with a RBI groundout and Seth Johnson drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-2.
The Aggies scored four runs of their own in the bottom of the second to retake the lead 6-4. With one out, Travis Bartek walked and Erik Schindewolf reached on a fielding error by Hudson at short. After Pennington flew out to center, Patton delivered his second blow of the game, a three-run bomb over the wall in right. Austin Boggs, who doubled, scored one batter later when Coby Mavroulis singled.
Kyle McCulloch replaced LeCure to start the third. LeCure lasted two-complete innings, allowing six runs (two earned) on six hits.
Texas cut the lead to one run in the top of the fourth. Seth Johnston and Curtis Thigpen each singled with one out. Johnston drew a throw from John Infante in center by tagging from second on a fly ball. Infante's throw sailed into the dugout, allowing Johnston to score.
Patton drove in two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, this time on a single up the middle. Bartek and Schindewolf each doubled to start the inning. Both doubles were the result of routine flyballs being lost in the lights. After Pennington walked to load the bases, left-hander Buck Cody replaced McCulloch to face Patton.
Another A&M outfield error led to a Texas run in the fifth. Hudson, who singled, scored all the way from first when Bartek misplayed a single to left by J.D. Reininger.
The Horns regained the lead in the top of the sixth and chased Jackson in the process. Thigpen scored on a Taylor Teagarden groundout. After back-to-back two outs walks to Carson Kainer and Crouch, Hudson belted a three-run homer to left to make the score 10-8.
Doug Frame replaced Jackson, who lasted 5.2 innings, allowing 10 runs (six earned) on 12 hits.
Frame held the Horns scoreless until the ninth, when Texas scored a pair of insurance runs on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly.
Texas reliever Kyle Yates (1-1) threw a scoreless fifth to earn the win.
Huston Street recorded his 10th save of the season, allowing one run in the final four innings. The run came in the ninth when Boggs belted his fifth homer of the season.
The series concludes Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. at Olsen Field.
