The 19th-ranked Texas A&M soccer team ended in a 1-1 tie with the Oklahoma State Cowgirls, in front of 625 fans Sunday at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex in Stillwater. The tie gives the Aggies a 10-3-2, 4-2-1 Big 12 record while OSU moves to 10-3-3, 3-3-1 in conference.
"Coming into Stillwater and getting a tie is a bit of a disappointment for us," commented A&M head coach G. Guerrieri. "OSU played great. They kept so many people behind the ball, at all times. It's hard to attack against that on their home-field where they're undefeated this year. It's a really good result for them. They really played hard."
In a game that started out slowly with an exchanging of possession of the ball between the Aggies and the Cowgirls, it was OSU that struck first. In the 19th minute of play the Cowgirls took a 1-0 lead when Aggie defender Annie Burnett touched the ball into A&M's own goal after a deflection from goalkeeper Kati Jo Spisak.
The first half ended with OSU leading A&M 1-0, however the shots were even at eight apiece.
The Aggies came out attacking at the start of the second half and after a missed handball call in the penalty box in the 50th minute, Tulsa native, Emily Peterson worked herself into an open area and fired a clean shot from 18 yards out that sailed past Cowgirl goalkeeper Jeanne Rankin to tie the game one-all and give the freshman defender her first goal of her collegiate career.
A few minutes later, A&M was awarded a free kick at the top left of the box, but the Linda Pierson shot ricocheted off the top right of the crossbar.
OSU's first shot of the second half came with 18:55 left in regulation as Jesyca Rosholt beat an Aggie defender and sent a shot directly on goal but Spisak was waiting ready to make the save and keep the game tied at one.
The momentum from the A&M goal was enough to keep the Aggie offensive attack coming full force, as the Ags kept control of the ball for the majority of the second half. With only 3:10 left in regulation, Ashlee Pistorius sent what was thought to be the game-winner past Rankin, but the Aggies were called for offsides and time expired to end regulation play, in a 1-1 tie.
The Aggies outshot the Cowgirls 11-2 in the second half. The first 10-minute overtime remained deadlocked as A&M fired three shots to OSU's one.
Melissa Garey got off a shot in the first 20 seconds of the second over time but Rankin was able to layout for the save. Rosholt countered quickly with a shot of her own but the shot twisted wide left.
With 2:22 left in the second overtime, Pistorius had a dead-on shot that was headed over the top of the goal by OSU defender Lauren Colwell. The last chance for the Aggies to take the win came off a free kick from Pistorius with just over a minute left however Rankin made the save and the game ended in a double-overtime tie.
"I'm pleased with the effort our players put in," said Guerrieri. "It's unfortunate that we didn't get the win but we did come out of here with a point and now we get a chance to go home and finish off the season and try to win a championship at home."
The Aggies return to College Station to face the Colorado Buffaloes on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at the Aggie Soccer Stadium.
