Texas A&M freshman Takia Starks was named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Rookie of the Week after leading the Aggies with 16 points in a win over UNLV in the championship game of the Duel in the Desert Sunday in Las Vegas, the league office announced Monday.
Starks, a guard from Houston, came off the bench in the final to solidify All-Tournament Team selection and a second league rookie honor in the last three weeks as A&M beat UNLV, 73-48.
?Despite us keeping her off the court for 13 minutes in the first half, Takia still managed to come in and make her shots as she took control of the game,? A&M coach Gary Blair said. ?No matter what position she plays, the one or the two, she has the confidence to lead the team when she is on the court. That?™s all a product of good high school and AAU coaching and taking hold of what she?™s learned here.?
Against UNLV, Starks was successful on 5-of-13 shooting including 2-of-3 from long range and 4-of-5 at the free throw line. She also had two rebounds and an assist.
Against Detroit in the first round, Starks scored 10 points with two assists and two steals. She was 5-of-8 shooting from the field.
For the tournament, Starks was 10-of-21 shooting and 4-of-5 at the free throw line. She averaged 13 points off the bench.
Starks was named league Rookie of the Week on Dec. 5. She is the fourth Aggie to earn multiple Big 12 Rookie of the Week honors in the last two seasons.
Last season, Morenike Atunrase, A?™Quonesia Franklin, and Patrice Reado earned Big 12 Rookie of Week honors three times each. Atunrase was named the league?™s freshman of the year.
An A&M player has been named Big 12 Rookie of the Week in six of the last 10 award weeks dating to last February.
The Aggies are 6-2 overall and will host Dartmouth on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Reed Arena. All tickets are half price to basketball games through Jan. 4 by calling the Athletic Ticket Office at 979-845-2311 or on-line AggieAthletics.com
