The sixth-ranked Texas A&M soccer team defeated Southern Mississippi, 4-0, in an exhibition match before an estimated 2,400 fans at the Aggie Soccer Stadium on Saturday.
The Aggies controlled play the entire match, outshooting the Golden Eagles, 26-2. Three first half goals all but sealed the win for A&M.
"I was real pleased with our speed of play tonight," commented A&M head coach G Guerrieri. "Southern Miss had a very organized defense and it was a good test for us to try and break it down. Our midfield did a good job of keeping possession. We didn't finish all of our opportunities but for a preseason game we played well."
Becky Olson started the scoring by taking advantage of a penalty kick, burying her attempt into the lower left corner. The penalty kick was awarded when Allison Martino was taken down by a Southern Miss defender in the penalty area in the seventh minute.
Three minutes later, Laura Probst beat Golden Eagles' keeper Holly Cox with a direct free kick from 25 yards out to make the score 2-0.
Melissa Garey gave the Aggies a 3-0 lead when she scored a beautiful goal from the left sideline 31 seconds before time expired in the second half. Garey beat a Southern Miss defender and sent a shot from a sharp angle that curled inside the far post.
The lone goal in the second half came in the 73rd minute when Laura Grace Robinson headed a cross from Laura Probst which hit the crossbar and caromed past the endline.
Both of the shots taken by Southern Miss were in the first half and resulted in saves by A&M goalie Kati Jo Spisak.
The exhibition match was the Aggies' only tune-up before opening the regular-season next Friday, August 26, against Stephen F. Austin. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. at the Aggie Soccer Stadium.
