The 14th-ranked defending Big 12 Regular Season and Tournament Champions, Texas A&M Aggies beat the Missouri Tigers 3-2 in front of a record setting crowd of 714 at the Audrey J. Walton Complex, to open Big 12 Conference play on Friday.
"Missouri came out and played incredibly well for 90 minutes and scored two great goals against our defense," commented A&M head coach G Guerrieri. "I am very pleased with the end result. Our girls showed how much confidence they have in each other's abilities in being able to come from behind twice and still pull off the victory; they played with grit and heart."
The Tigers took an early 1-0 lead as Amber Swinehart sailed a pass from Jennifer Nobis past Aggie goalkeeper Kati Jo Spisak in the 7th minute of play. However the Aggies countered with 29:58 on the clock when Melissa Garey served the ball to Ashley Pistorius from the left endline to tie the game one all.
Mizzou's Mo Redmond gave the lead back to the Tigers, 2-1, after sending a corner kick in the 31st minute of play into the back of the goal.
A&M had an opportunity to tie the game with 11:59 remaining in the first half when they were awarded a penalty kick, unfortunately Pistorius sent the shot wide right and the score remained 2-1 in Missouri's favor.
Less than a minute ticked off the clock before the Aggies had a second opportunity to tie the game. Amy Berend capitalized on a pass from Pistorius as she sent a hard shot past Mizzou goalkeeper Laura Buehrig evening the score 2-2.
The score remained tied at the end of the first half. During the first period of play A&M was given two yellow cards with 10 fouls while Mizzou had 12, the Aggies outshot the Tiger's 15-4.
For the first 28 minutes of the second half, possession of the ball flip flopped between A&M and Missouri, until with 17:38 left on the clock Kat Krambeer fought for a rebound from Emily Peterson and fired the game-winner into the back of the net, putting the Aggies on top for the remainder of the game 3-2.
Pistorius was named State Farm Player of the Game with a goal scored and an assist recorded.
A&M plays their second conference game of the weekend on Sunday against the Jayhawks of the University of Kansas at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex in Lawrence.
