The No. 11 Texas A&M Aggies recorded their sixth straight victory and third shutout at home as they beat the Boise State Broncos 2-0 on Friday at the Aggie Soccer Stadium.
"I think we did a great job of maintaining possession of the ball," commented A&M head coach G Guerrieri. "I was impressed with how courageous Boise State was in tracking and defending our players. They never gave up."
The Aggies maintained possession of the ball in the first half of play, outshooting the Broncos 12-2 and taking five corner kicks to Boise State's one.
Melissa Garey added her team and conference leading 10th goal of the season as she capitalized on a perfectly placed cross from Annie Burnett from the right side of the field in the ninth minute of play.
With 30:06 on the clock Garey nearly scored again as she took the Bronco's goalkeeper, Kim Parker, one on one but her shot went wide right. Carrie Berend sent a pass to Ashlee Pistorius with just under 19 minutes left in the first half but the duo couldn't net the ball past Boise State's leaping Parker.
A&M went into halftime with a 1-0 lead and came out firing in the same aggressive manner as they did in the first half of play.
However, it was not until the 73rd minute that Lauren Pfister headed in her first goal of the season off a nicely placed corner kick into the middle of the box by Madison Klovstad from the left sideline.
With just under 14 minutes left in regulation, the Aggies were awarded a penalty kick off a Bronco handball however Michaela Morrison, who replaced Parker in the Broncos goal entering the second half, saved the shot taken by Aggie defender Linda Pierson.
Lauren Pfister was named State Farm Player of the Game coming off the bench to score her first goal of 2005.
As the game ended, a vast majority of the 3,967 fans in attendance remained in the stands as the Aggie soccer team helped draw the names of those 12th Man Team members who would take home their game-worn jerseys.
"It was so awesome to get to take part in the promotion," said Garey. "These fans are so supportive of us day in and day out, this was a great way for us to get to interact with them and give a little something back for all the cheering they do for us."
The Aggies head to Austin to defend their 2-0 conference record against the Longhorns in the Lone Star Showdown on Sunday. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN-U. You can also access live game stats by logging on to AggieAthletics.com.
