After a physically hard fought battle, the No. 6 Texas A&M Aggies ended in a 1-1 tie with the Wolverines from the University of Michigan.
"The girls battled hard," commented A&M head coach G Guerrieri. "We deserved to get more than just a tie out of this game.
In the first 45 minutes of play A&M took 10 shots to Michigan's three. After a shot by Melissa Garey ricocheted off the crossbar and back in front of the goal, Amy Berend and Laura Probst had shot attempts saved before sophomore forward, Ashlee Pistorius sailed one past Wolverine goalkeeper, Madison Gates for the Aggies' only goal, three minutes into the game.
Late in the first half, A&M had another chance to score when Suzzette Devloo headed a cross from Annie Burnett into the right post.
By the end of the first half, two yellow cards were handed out to Amy Berend and Allison Martino, and the Aggies had recorded eight fouls while the Wolverines only had three.
At the 61 minute mark, Michigan sent a cross to the right side of the field for a header that was blocked by A&M goalkeeper Kati Jo Spisak, but a rebound by Therese Heaton hit the back of the net to tie the game, 1-1.
As time expired to end regulation play, the Aggies had taken 16 shots to Michigan's 11.
In overtime, the game continued to be physical, as A&M was given three more yellow cards and senior captain Carrie Berend was ejected. However, A&M was able to keep their composure after each yellow card, channeling the adrenaline into more pressure, and continuing to challenge the Michigan players.
"Laura Probst played 110 minutes of ball at a great pace," said Guerrieri. "Becky Olson also did a magnificent job all over the field."
Laura Probst was named State Farm player of the game.
The Aggies return home for action at the Aggie Soccer Stadium on Friday, September 9, when they take on the East Carolina Pirates at 7:00 p.m. You can hear and see all the action by logging on to aggieathletics.com.
