Blake Stouffer, Adam Hale and Josh Stinson each banged out two hits on Friday, but Texas A&M could not withstand a seven-run fourth by Texas Tech as the Red Raiders defeated the Aggies, 11-5, at Olsen Field.
With the loss, the Aggies dropped to 15-10 overall and to 0-4 in Big 12 play. The Red Raiders improved to 19-7 and 2-1 in the league.
?That is the first time in 25 games that everything that could go wrong on the mound for us, did go wrong for us,? head coach Rob Childress. ?I thought our guys competed hard and fought hard all night. We had good body language and I was pleased with our effort tonight.?
The Aggies scored a run in the top of the first to take the early lead. Stouffer was hit by a pitch from Tech starter AJ Ramos and scored on a triple by Hale.
The Aggies added another run in the second to stretch their lead to 2-0. Jose Salazar was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kyle Colligan. Stinson?™s single to left plated Salazar.
Tech cut the led to 2-1 with an RBI single by Roger Kieschnick in the top of the third.
The nine-run fourth proved to be the knock-out punch. Tech had seven hits in the inning and the big blow was a base-clearing double by Matt Smith.
A&M answered in the bottom of the fourth when Ryan Hill started the inning with a double and later scored on a groundout by Colligan and scored two more times in the fifth on RBI singles by Hale and Salazar.
Tech added two runs in the top of the fifth and one more in the seventh.
Red Raider reliever Dustin Richardson (3-1) did not allow a run over the final 4 1/3 innings to earn the win.
A&M starter Kyle Nicholson (3-2) shouldered the loss, allowing six runs ?- five earned ?- on 10 hits.
Anthony Vasquez gobbled up four complete innings out of the bullpen, allowing three runs ?- one earned ?- and striking out five.
Game two of the three-game series will be played Saturday at 7 p.m.
