Jason Meyer struck out a season-high 10 batters in eight-complete inning and Kyle Colligan delivered the game-winning hit in the bottom of the eighth on Friday afternoon, as Texas A&M defeated Baylor, 4-2, at Olsen Field.
With a runner on second and two outs, Adam Hale was intentionally walked. Colligan ripped an RBI double into right center, allowing Jose Salazar to score. Hale scored all the way from first when center fielder Chase Gerdes misplayed Colligan?™s double.
?It feels good to get back into the win column,? A&M head coach Rob Childress said. ?I thought Jason Meyer was outstanding and he didn?™t walk anyone. Spencer Jackson hit a big homer in the second to give us some confidence and Kyle Colligan had a huge hit in the eighth with two outs.?
Jackson?™s homer, a two-run shot to the opposite field in right, was the second of the year. Jackson made his first appearance since a hand injury has kept him out of the lineup since March 7.
Meyer (2-1) did not walk a man and allowed two runs on six hits. His 10 strikeouts were a season high and one short of his career best effort.
Matt Ueckert retired the side in the ninth to earn his first save of the season.
With the win, the Aggies snapped a seven-game losing streak and improved to 20-21 overall and 4-12 in Big 12 play. Baylor fell to 23-16 and 7-9.
Baylor scored first in the top of the second when Zach Dillon, who was hit by a pitch to start the inning, scored on a sacrifice bunt by Kevin Russo.
The Bears tied the game, 2-2, in the top of the eighth. Kevin Sevigny led off the inning with a triple to the gap in left center and with one out, Beamer Weems doubled to left to score Sevigny.
Ryan LaMotta (5-3) pitched all eight innings for Baylor. He struck out one and walked four.
The series shifts to Waco for games two and three. First pitch for Saturday?™s game is set for 6 p.m. at the Baylor Ballpark.
