Kyle Colligan went 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI on Saturday afternoon, but three Texas A&M errors led to four unearned runs as No. 7 Texas defeated the Aggies, 5-3, before 7,740 fans at Olsen Field.
With the loss, A&M dropped to 21-24 overall and to 4-15 in Big 12 play. Texas improved to 30-15 and 14-4.
?When it comes down to it the team that makes the least mistakes usually wins,? A&M head coach Rob Childress said. ?Today that was the case. We are going to come out tomorrow and get after it and hopefully we will make fewer mistakes than they do.?
Aggie starter Jason Meyer (2-2) shouldered the loss, allowing four runs ?- one earned ?- in seven-complete innings of work. He struck out four and did not walk a man. Texas starter Kyle McCulloch (7-4) earned the win, allowing three runs ?- two erarned ?- on five hits. He struck out three and walked one in seven innings on the mound. Austin Wood retired the side in the ninth to earn his sixth save of the year.
With one out in the bottom of the fourth, A&M scratched first with back-to-back doubles by Colligan and Adam Hale. Austin Boggs delivered his second hit of the game, also a double, to score Hale from second. Josh Stinson reached first on a passed ball after a strikeout and Boggs scored all the way from second when Texas catcher Preston Clark?™s throw to first was wild.
Texas answered in the top of the fifth with a two-out, three-run home run to right by Drew Stubbs. The longball was the 11th of the season for Stubbs. All three runs were unearned as an error extended the inning.
The Longhorns received another big two-out hit in the sixth, this time a RBI double down the line in left by Nick Peoples to take the lead, 4-3.
Texas added an insurance run in the top of the ninth with the help of two more A&M errors. Chance Wheeless reached on a fielding error by second baseman Parker Dalton and with one out, Kainer reached on an error by Boggs at third. Preston Clark then looped a single over the infield to make the score 5-3.
Game two of the three-game set will be played on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Olsen Field. The finale will be played at Disch-Falk Field in Austin on Monday at 2 p.m.
