Kyle Colligan went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and three runs scored on Sunday afternoon, but Texas A&M left five runners in scoring position and No. 7 Texas scored an unearned run in the top of the ninth to defeat the Aggies, 6-5, before 6,410 at Olsen Field.
Colligan has hit safely in nine of his last 10 games and is eight for his last 18 with six runs scored, five RBI, three doubles, one triple and one home run.
?We have been in position to win so many games this year,? A&M head coach Rob Childress said. ?It is just a matter of us going and taking the game from the other team. After three innings, Kyle Nicholson could have folded the tent but he got us to the ninth inning and pitched outstanding today.?
A&M starting pitcher Kyle Nicholson posted a gutsy performance, pitching 8 1/3 innings after allowing five runs in the first three frames. The only other run he allowed was the game-winner in the ninth when he hit Nick Peoples with the bases loaded. The run proved to be unearned as an error on a bunt play extended the inning.
The Aggies dropped to 21-25 overall and to 4-16 in Big 12 play while the Longhorns improved to 31-15 and 15-4.
Texas took the early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Peoples started the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Chance Wheeless. After a groundout to first by Drew Stubbs, Carson Kainer was hit by a pitch and both runners scored on a two-out double by Hunter Harris.
The Aggies answered with two runs off Longhorn starter Adrian Alaniz in the bottom of the first. John Infante walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch. With one out, Colligan lifted a two-run homer over the wall in right to tie the game. It was Colligan?™s second dinger of the season.
A&M touched paydirt again in the bottom of the second to take the lead, 3-2. Austin Boggs singled and moved to third on a single to right by Craig Stinson. Blake Stouffer drove Boggs home with a chopper that found its way through the right side.
UT regained the lead in the top of the third when the first four men to plate recorded hits. Peoples singled and Wheeless and Stubbs each legged out bunt singles to load the bases. Both were attempted sacrifice bunt attempts that were not fielded by A&M defenders. Kainer then laced a two-RBI double to left-center and Stubbs later scored when Bradley Suttle grounded into a double play.
A&M cut the lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the third. Colligan doubled down the line in left to chase Alaniz from the game. Reliever Kyle Walker walked Adam Hale and hit Spencer Jackson to load the bases with no outs. After Boggs struck out, Craig Stinson lifted a sacrifice fly to center, allowing Colligan to score.
Colligan scored his third run of the day in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at five. He walked to lead off the inning, moved to third on a single to right by Adam Hale and later scored on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Jake Vasquez.
Randy Boone (4-2) threw the seventh and the eighth to record the win and Austin Wood struck out two of the three men he faced in the ninth to earn his seveth save of the year.
The Aggies will look to salvage one game of the series on Monday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Disch-Falk Field in Austin.
