The Texas A&M soccer team (4-3-1) overwhelmed the Sam Houston State Bearkats 9-0 before 2,145 fans at the Aggie Soccer Stadium. Five different Aggies scored on the evening, with three, Ashlee Pistorius, Natalie Currie and Melissa Garey, each finding the back of the net twice.
Senior forward Kat Krambeer got the scoring party started just 53 seconds into the match when she collected a ball headed to her from freshman midfielder Amber Gnatzig and beat Sam Houston (2-7-0) goalkeeper Ashley Zendt with a solid shot from just nine yards in front of goal. The Aggies tallied their second goal of the night just six minutes later when All-American forward Ashlee Pistorius headed in a corner kick from Madison Klovstad.
The Aggies controlled the pace of the fast moving match all night and attacked the Sam Houston goal from all angles. In the 23rd minute, they made it 3-0 when Paige Carmichael and Sara Albrecht combined to play Gnatzig in behind the Bearkat defense, where she scored on a hard shot from 12 yards.
The Bearkats fought hard all night and kept the score at 0-3 until the waning moments of the first half when a twin sister act took center stage. First Cydne Currie hit a sharp shot through the Bearkat keeper?™s hands and into the upper corner of the net after she was played in behind the Sam Houston back line by her twin sister Natalie. Cydne then returned the favor two minutes later when she slid a ball between two Bearkat defenders to Natalie, just inside the penalty area, where she drove a hard shot into the roof of the net.
All-Big 12 forward Melissa Garey then closed out the first half scoring just 50 seconds later when she combined with Cydne at the top of the Sam Houston penalty area and buried a low shot into the lower corner of the goal, making the score 6-0 at halftime.
?This is just the kind of game that we needed,? said A&M head coach G Guerrieri. ?We?™ve played such a tough schedule that we needed a game of affirmation to help lift the confidence of our great players.?
A&M came out of the halftime break with guns blazing as they scored their seventh goal of the evening in the 47th minute, where Garey beat Zendt on a header from six yards in front of goal, off a corner kick by Julie Almeida and a flick from Lauren Pfister.
Ten minutes later, Natalie scored her second goal of the game by knocking in a loose ball in front of the Bearkat goal. And then Pistorius finished off the 9-0 scoreline in the 72nd minute when she took a give-and-go from Garey and ripped a bullet into the upper 90 from 18 yards out.
The Aggies outshot Sam Houston 45-4, and took 18 corner kicks, compared to none for the Bearkats. The 18 corner kicks was a new record at the Aggie Soccer Stadium.
Natalie and Garey were named State Farm Players of the Game with two goals and an assist each.
A&M will open Big 12 play this weekend when they travel to Waco to face the Baylor Lady Bears. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field.
