LAWRENCE, Kan. - After allowing a goal in the 28th minute, the No. 6 Texas A&M soccer team was unable to score the equalizer down the stretch and fell to Kansas 1-0 on a cool Friday afternoon at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex
The Aggies' (12-2-1, 5-1-1 Big 12) gave up just their second goal in Big 12 play as the Jayhawks (9-5-1, 3-3-1 Big 12) picked up their third conference victory.
The lone goal of the match came in the 28th minute when Shannon McCabe attempted to send a cross from the left side near the end line. The miss hit went past the outstretched arm of A&M goalkeeper Kelly Dyer and into the far upper 90 of the Aggie goal.
"It's disappointing to lose, especially when we created as many good chances as we had, but wasted by missing the target," said head coach G Guerrieri. "You have to credit KU. They played hard and scored a fortunate goal. That's what happens in sports some times. But they preserved the win because they worked so hard and did the things they needed to get the result."
A&M outshot Kansas 17-9 and held the advantage in corner kicks 8-3. However, the Aggies only put three shots on frame, compared to four from the Jayhawks.
A&M had several scoring opportunities in the first half, with one great chance in the 33rd minute. Redshirt freshman Kat Armstrong lobbed the ball across the goal to sophomore Rachel Shipley who flicked it on to sophomore Alyssa Mautz. The O'Fallon, Mo., native used a second header to push the ball to the near post, but Kansas keeper Julie Hanley was there waiting.
Another great opportunity came in the 41st minute as West shook a Jayhawk defender just outside the corner of the penalty box and blasted a right-footed shot that bounced off the far post.
A&M was on the attack nearly the entire second half, earning seven of its corner kicks and outshooting Kansas 11-5, but was unable to connect for the equalizer.
Texas A&M soccer returns home to the Aggie Soccer Stadium on Sunday to take on No. 20 Missouri at 1:35 p.m. in a match that is televised live on ESPNU.
