LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas A&M freshman Bri Young scored the game-winning goal and sophomore goalkeeper Kelly Dyer posted a shutout as the Aggie soccer team downed Texas Tech, 1-0, on Friday night at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
A native of Castle Pines North, Colo., Young headed the ball into the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season on a corner kick from sophomore Rachel Shipley in the 32nd minute. Dyer recorded six saves en route to her sixth shutout of the season.
A&M improved to 13-3-1 overall and 6-2-1 in the Big 12, while the Red Raiders evened their record to 8-8-1 and 3-7-0 in conference play.
"When you win four straight Big 12 Championships, you're going to get every team's best game and we got Tech's best game tonight," said head coach G Guerrieri. "They did exactly the right things in the second half and we had a couple big performances on the defensive side. Tonight was a win in the Big 12 and on an artificial surface that we've never played on before. Three points on the road is a big deal and we put ourselves in a position to try to compete with Colorado on Sunday."
After the first nine minutes of play, A&M dominated possession throughout the first half, and outshot Tech 9-2.
Ten minutes into the match, the Aggies were dangerous with two back-to-back shots by freshmen Raven Tatum and Beth West. West first found Tatum inside the penalty box and the Dallas, Texas, native dribbled around a Tech defender to strike a shot that a diving Tina Rincon punched out. West crashed the goal and fired another shot on the rebound that Rincon was forced to the ground again to save.
The Aggies continued to control the game and in the 31st minute, Tatum found freshman Becca Herrera outside the penalty box. From Aurora, Colo., Herrera lobbed a cross to sophomore Whitney Hooper inside the six-yard box. The forward headed the ball down and on the bounce up it went off the outstretched hand of Rincon and out of bounds to set up the first of two consecutive corner kicks for A&M.
On the second corner, Shipley send a bending ball to the far post where Young headed it in for a 1-0 advantage.
After halftime, the Red Raiders forced Dyer to make six saves, three of which came in the last seven minutes of play. The Germantown, Tenn., product was flawless and helped the Aggies to their sixth win in the Big 12.
The Aggies close out league play on Sunday as they continue on to Boulder, Colo., to take on the Buffaloes at 2 p.m. CU leads the Big 12 and defeated Drake 3-0 on Friday evening.
