COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas A&M sophomore Alyssa Mautz was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Mautz posted her first career hat-trick to lead A&M over Houston Baptist, 6-2 this past Thursday. Down 2-1 in the second half, the O'Fallon, Mo., native connected the equalizer and the game-winner just two minutes apart. Her third goal of the match and fourth of the year was scored in the 79th minute. Mautz added two assists for a career-high eight points, which ranks second for most points in a game by an individual.
Mautz earned the conference award for the first time in her career. She was A&M's 10th Big 12 Player of the Week this season. This team effort breaks the Aggies' previous record of six such honors in one season. The last player to receive a weekly award was freshman Beth West on Oct. 28.
This is the final Big 12 Player of the Week award for the 2008 season.
The Aggie soccer team moved up to a No. 8 ranking this week in the Soccer America poll and travels to San Antonio, Texas, for the Big 12 Championship Nov. 5, 7 and 9. The Aggies are the No. 2 seed and take on No. 7 seed Kansas at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
