AGGIE SOCCER DOWNS VIRGINIA TECH, 3-1
BLACKSBURG, Va. - Texas A&M sophomore Laura Grace Robinson scored the game-winning goal as the No. 11 Aggie soccer team (4-1-0) defeated Virginia Tech (2-2-0) 3-1 on Friday evening in Blacksburg, Va.
"Virginia tech is an athletic, tough team," said head coach G Guerrieri. "They made it very difficult for us to play, so I'm obviously real proud of our team for getting a road win against an ACC foe."
In an evenly matched first half, the Aggies fired off six shots to Tech's five.
In the 12th minute, Dyer registered her first save diving and deflecting a shot that came from inside the box to the far post from the Hokies' Marika Gray.
A&M's first scoring opportunity came two minutes later as Robinson sent a ball in to a sprinting Cydne Currie. The junior just got her head on the ball, nodding it into the hands of the Tech keeper.
Dyer kept the Hokies off the scoreboard again in the 22nd minute. Gray blasted a shot from the right side of the penalty area that Dyer deflected over the top of the cross bar. Only two minutes later, Kelsey Billups sent a bullet to the near post that Dyer warded off with a quick hand.
The Aggies took the ball into attack and Currie netted the first goal of the game and her third of the year in the 26th minute. Freshman Becca Herrera was at midfield and played a bending ball to the Irving, Texas, native inside the six-yard box. Currie's shot crossed in front of the goal, hit the far post and bounced in to give the Aggies the 1-0 lead.
Tech evened the score at one apiece in the 32nd minute as Gray fired a ball from the right side of the penalty box past an outstretched Dyer and inside the far post.
In the second half, the game-winning goal came in the 67th minute. Robinson received a pass from freshman Beth West at about 30 yards and blasted a shot that bounced past a diving Hokie keeper, off the far post and into the back of the netting to put the Aggies up 2-1.
With the Ags on the offense, an own goal in the 72nd minute increased A&M's lead to 3-1.
Play resumes on Sunday at the Hawthorne Suites Invitational as A&M faces No. 17 Wake Forest at 10 a.m. followed by Tech and George Washington at 12:30 p.m. The Demon Deacons downed the Colonials 2-0 earlier on Friday.
