BERKELEY, Calif. - In a back-and-forth battle on Friday evening, the Texas A&M soccer team fell to No. 14 California, 1-0, with a late score by the Bears at Edwards Stadium.
Cal's Lisa Kevorkian scored the game-winning goal in the 70th minute to improve the Bears to 2-1-0, while the Aggies evened their record at 2-2-0.
"It was a tough game, fast-paced and combative," commented A&M head coach G Guerrieri. "It was one of those back-and-forth contests that you're waiting to see who's going to get the break-through moment and Cal got it, and then held on. They have a very good reputation at home and today they were very good and held up to that reputation."
In a possession-changing game, the two teams were knotted at the half.
A&M appeared to take the lead 10 minutes into the second period, but its goal was called back on an offside. Junior Kim Castleberry at the back post. The McKinney, Texas, native then put the ball in the back of the net, only to be called a step offside.
Cal loosened the knot in the 70th-minute when Kevorkian struck the ball into the upper corner from about 18 yards out on a feed from Megan Jesolva at nearly 30 yards.
Jen Kmezich, Mary Grace Schmidt and Rachel Shipley were several players who recorded shots for A&M.
The 10th-ranked Aggies return to action on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. against Saint Mary's. Follow all the action with live stats and free live audio on AggieAthletics.com.
