COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The 12th-ranked Texas A&M men's tennis team got off to a 2-0 start with a 6-1 victory over Nicholls State to close out a season-opening doubleheader held Saturday before a crowd of 739 fans at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. The Aggies also defeated UT Pan American, 6-1, in the early portion of the tennis twin bill.
For the second-straight match, A&M swept the doubles point with help from the 18th-ranked tandem of junior All-American Marcus Lunt (San Antonio, Texas) and junior Alexey Grigorov (Moscow, Russia) and freshman Niall Angus (London, England) and freshman Beau Blackshear (Brentwood, Tenn.) also followed suit with 8-3 and 8-4 victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 lines respectively.
The Aggies would later capture five of the six singles matches against the Colonels (0-1). Dadamo, a transfer from Florida who is currently ranked No. 32 nationally in the Campbell/ITA singles rankings, picked up A&M's second point of the match with a 6-3, 6-1 straight-set victory over NSU's top player Radu Ionescu at No. 1. Junior Marcus Lunt clinched the Aggies' second-straight win of the day with a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Eric Fisher at No. 4.
"It was a good starting match for us," Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said. "I knew we would have a few players who would be a little uptight today. That's normal for the first match of the season. I was pleased overall with our effort. We accomplished what we needed to do. Hopefully, we will get better as a result, and be ready to play next weekend."
Up next, the Aggies will host Fresno State, Oklahoma State and Rice in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Jan. 29-30 at the Mitchell Tennis Center. Oklahoma State and Rice will play at 10 a.m. (CT) followed by A&M and Fresno State on Friday, Jan. 29 at 1 p.m. (CT). The Aggies will face either OSU or Rice on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 1 p.m. (CT), while Fresno State will take on either the Cowboys or Owls at 10 a.m. (CT).
