COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The 12th-ranked Texas A&M men's tennis team defeated UT Pan American, 6-1, in its spring season opener held Saturday afternoon at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
The Aggies (1-0) won eight of nine matches against the Broncs (0-1) behind strong singles and doubles play throughout the lineup comprised mostly of newcomers to the program.
Sophomore Alexis Klegou (Dunkerque, France), freshman Niall Angus (London, England) and freshman Alberto Bautista (McAllen, Texas) all made their Aggie debuts playing at the No. 2 through No. 4 lines in singles. Bautista picked up A&M's third point of the match with a straight-set victory over UTPA's Nirvick Mohinta, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 4, while two-time junior All-American Austin Krajicek (Brandon, Fla.) clinched the win for the Aggies with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Aswin Vijayaragavan at No. 1.
"We knew it was going to be sort of nerve racking out there today," said Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton, who enters his fourth season in Aggieland. "It was the first match for a lot of our guys. We have a lot of new players who haven't been in this kind of setting before and it takes some time to get acclimated to it. Overall, I was pleased, but I knew some of our guys were going to play nervously - and they did. Now that they have a match under their belt, hopefully they can go back to just playing. I knew UT Pan American was going to be tough and fight for every point. It was a good first match for us to get through, especially to be challenged like we were in doubles and in some of the singles matches. It gave our players a chance to get out there and get their feet wet."
Klegou, who sat out last season as a redshirt, downed Brett Bernstein, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 2, and Angus, who joined the team in January, outlasted Beau Bernstein in a third-set super tiebreaker, 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (7). Sophomore Colin Hoover (Victoria, Texas) also contributed to the final team score allowing only two games to Marcus Dornauf, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 5 singles. Hoover and Krajicek were one of only three returning players in the lineup against UTPA.
The Aggies continue their season-opening doubleheader weekend with Nicholls State (0-0) at 3 p.m. (CT) at the Mitchell Center.
