COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas A&M Senior Alyssa Mautz scored the golden goal in double overtime to give the No. 6 Aggie soccer team an exciting 2-1 victory over Oklahoma Friday night at the Aggie Soccer Stadium.
For A&M's seventh-straight win, Mautz rebounded her own shot that was blocked by a defender in the box, then netted the game winner inside the left post from 16 yards. The O'Fallon, Mo., native tallied six shots, two on frame and two points on the night.
Before the game, eight Aggies were honored in a Senior Night ceremony. The senior class accounted for all five of A&M's points in the match. Senior Rachel Shipley recorded the first goal for the Aggies with an assist from classmate Whitney Hooper.
The victory over the Sooners gives A&M the opportunity to win the Big 12 Championship, placing the Aggies in a first-place tie with No. 5 Oklahoma State. The Cowgirls travel to College Station Sunday for what could be the championship match.
"What a more fitting end for Senior Night than for our seniors to score the two goals," said head coach G Guerrieri. "I'm really proud of them. Now we have the chance to play for the championship on Sunday."
The Aggies controlled possession for the first 10 minutes of the match, getting out to a 5-0 shot advantage. Not even a minute into the match, A&M was on the attack and Mautz missed just wide before junior Bri Young tabbed the first shot on frame with a free kick between the posts, forcing the first of 12 saves on the night by Oklahoma goalkeeper Kelsey Devonshire.
The Sooners got into the match and evened the shot count 5-5 in the next 10 minutes.
Dangerous opportunities for both teams came on transition with a diving header by Mautz that landed in the Devonshire's arms, and a laser off of the far post by OU's Emily Reid.
The Aggies ended the half strong with two corners and four shots in four minutes, including a header by Young that was saved on the line by an OU defender.
After four minutes of play in the second period, Oklahoma's Caitlin Mooney footed the first goal of the match from just outside the box.
Less than a minute later, A&M evened the score when Shipley kicked a short corner to Hooper. Hooper popped the ball back out to Shipley at 23 yards and she chipped it into the upper 90 with her left foot.
The match turned quite physical and OU was issued three yellow cards by the end of regulation, but the two teams remained locked in a 1-1 draw through the 90th minute and the first overtime period.
In the fourth minute of double overtime, OU's Kelsey Kraft headed a shot that went off of the bottom of the crossbar, but senior Kelly Dyer was able to make her seventh save of the night. Two minutes later Mautz scored her fifth game winner of the season.
Texas A&M doubled the number of shots (36-18) and shots on goal (16-8) taken by OU. The Aggies also held a 7-4 edge on corner kicks.Young took a career-high and game-high 10 shots, and Shipley added a career-high nine shots.
A&M hosts OSU Sunday at 1:30 p.m. All A&M students will receive free entry with a student ID.
