ALPHARETTA, Ga. - Texas A&M junior Jordan Russell carded a 6-under 210 on the week to lead the Aggie men's golf team to a third-place finish at the fifth U.S. Collegiate Championship, held outside Atlanta at the Golf Club of Georgia.
A&M struggled to an 8-over 296 in Tuesday's final round, but still placed third overall in a 15-team field that featured multiple top-10 squads. Playing on its home course, host and 10th-ranked Georgia Tech posted a record-setting 28-under par 836, 27 strokes ahead of second-place and seventh-ranked UCLA (-1).
No. 13 USC (+3) was fourth, followed by No. 20 Virginia (+6), Wake Forest (+7), No. 19 Duke (+8), Cal (+12), Kent State (+25) and No. 13 Florida State (+25). No. 6 Washington (+30) finished 11th, with No. 17 Clemson (+41), East Tennessee State (+43), Georgia State (+45) and No. 24 South Carolina (+55) rounding out the field.
"While third place is a good finish against this field, we did not play well at all today," head coach J.T. Higgins said. "We had a chance to record a good round and simply did not produce. The effort was there and we tried hard, but we did not perform like a championship-caliber team. We will get back to work tomorrow and make sure we are ready for Dallas next week."
Russell (69-70-71) came in under par in each round to finish in third place overall, six strokes back of medalist James White of Georgia Tech (62-70-72=204, -12). Russell was the only Aggie to record a sub-par round on Tuesday.
"I'm proud for Jordan, as he put together three good rounds and had a strong finish," Higgins said. "Without him, today's round could have been a disaster."
Sophomore Cameron Peck (70-70-76=216) finished in 14th place at even par, while sophomore Case Cochran (70-78-75=223) placed 33rd at 7-over. Junior Geoff Shaw (77-73-74=224) finished 39th at 8-over and senior Conrad Shindler (75-73-77=225) was one shot back in 44th at 9-over.
Texas A&M returns to action on Monday when the Aggies compete in the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate in Dallas. The two-day, three-round event will be held on the par-71, 7,068-yard Royal Oaks Country Club. The course is located just east of Central Expressway on Greenville Avenue, between Royal Lane and Meadow Lane.
