Texas A&M Sweeps Laredo CC, 7-0

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The 17th-ranked Texas A&M men's tennis team defeated the country's second-ranked junior college squad, Laredo CC by a 7-0 count in the second match of the doubleheader held Sunday afternoon at George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
The Aggies (6-2) came out and swept the Palominos in the doubles point, the fifth time to do so this season. The doubles tandem of sophomore Marcus Lunt (San Antonio, Texas) sealed the doubles point for the Aggies, 8-3.
The Aggies came out in singles and won the first set in five out of the six matches. Sophomore Marcus Lunt also contributed with a two-set victory 6-2, and 6-0. It was sophomore John Lewis who clinched the match for the Aggies in his 6-1, and 6-2 victory over Leury Arias.
Junior Patrick Dean also contributed a two-set victory over Mateus Compos 7-5, and 6-2. Junior Alexey Grigorov (Moscow, Russia) won a hard-fought first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6(6), and won his second set 6-3. It was freshman Calon Alpar (Austin, Texas) who sealed the Aggies' sweep by battling back after losing his first set in a tie breaker, 7-6 (5), to win his second set and a super tie breaker 6-1, 1-0(7).
"We played some different combinations in our doubles matches today," said Texas A&M Head Coach Steve Denton. "They gelled well together, and I think that got us off to a good start and got us going. We took the first set in all but five of the matches. It helped set the tone for the evening, and was good for a few of our other guys who don't have an opportunity to play that often. It was important for us to get them in and play some matches and give us a chance to see them in action."
Up next, the Aggies will take on St. Edward's at noon (CT) and 40th-ranked TCU at 6 p.m. (CT) in another doubleheader match scheduled for Friday, Feb. 26 at the Mitchell Center.
