COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Cameron Seitzer delivered a game-winning RBI double in the top of the 13th inning to lift 17th-ranked Oklahoma to a 6-5 win over Texas A&M in 13 innings Saturday afternoon before 4,447 fans at Olsen Field.
Seitzer stepped to the plate after a one-out walk and ensuing single just inside the bag at first put the go-ahead run 90 feet away. The Sooner freshman lined the first pitch he saw to the wall in left center to push home the eventual winning run.
"Well, it was a great game," head coach Rob Childress said. "We had a two-run lead going into the ninth and weren't able to finish them. We were one semi-tough catch away from the game being over. But, we had chances to get big hits in the ninth, 11th and 12th and we just weren't able to do that. Late in the game, at home, you ought to be able to get that big hit. Those guys have gotten them before and they'll get them again. It was a great game."
The Aggies (22-15-1, 7-9-1) carried a two-run lead into the ninth inning, but Garrett Buechele fisted a one-out, two-run single just over the outstretched glove of second baseman Adam Smith and into right to tie the score at five. Both teams had numerous chances in the ensuing frames, but it was Seitzer who delivered the game-winner for the Sooners (28-11, 7-8) in what was the second-longest Big 12 game in A&M baseball history.
Brodie Greene and Adam Smith drove home runs in the first to stake the Aggies to a quick 2-0 lead. After OU tied the game with single runs in the second and third innings, Smith connected on his third home run of the season--a two-run shot to center in the third--to put A&M on top, 4-2.
Ryan Hubbard's second solo homer of the game came in the sixth to pull OU within one at 4-3. Two innings later, Matt Juengel delivered a crucial RBI single with one out to plate Joaquin Hinojosa and set the stage for the ninth.
Smith finished the day 3-for-7 with the home run and three RBIs, while Juengel added three hits and Greene notched a pair.
Buechele fueled OU's 13-hit afternoon with a 3-for-5, two-RBI effort. Hubbard, Seitzer and Caleb Bushyhead had two hits apiece.
Shane Minks (1-2) was saddled with the loss in relief after tossing the final two frames and allowing two hits, the one run and four walks. He struck out two.
Oklahoma closer Ryan Duke (1-1) picked up the win after shutting out A&M over the final 4 2/3 innings. He gave up four hits and fanned four.
Both starters pitched well but neither factored in the decision. Aggie sophomore Ross Stripling fanned a career-best 11 over 6 1/3 innings while allowing seven hits, three runs and three walks. OU's Zach Neal lasted seven complete and issued seven hits, three earned runs and no walks while punching out seven.
The series concludes on Sunday with first pitch set for 1:05 p.m. The game will be televised nationally by FOX College Sports and will be available on satellite on DirecTV Channel 617. Tickets are available online at 12thmanfoundation.com or at the Olsen Field box office on game day.
POSTGAME NOTES: Saturday's game was the second-longest Big 12 contest in school history ... the Aggies downed Nebraska, 6-3, in 16 innings on May 9, 2008 in Lincoln ... the game was also the longest ever (by innings) between Texas A&M and Oklahoma ... Ross Stripling's 11 strikeouts were a career high.
