Carson, Calif. - Texas A&M rising senior Rachel Shipley was one of 24 players brought to the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., for a week-long training camp for the U.S. Under-23 Women's National Team.
Shipley led the Aggie soccer team last season with 27 points and nine assists, and also netted nine goals. The All-Big 12 first team selection garnered All-Central Region first team honors and was named honorable mention to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Women's College Soccer Team of the Season. Shipley was also a finalist for the Soccer News Net Player of the Year award.
The U-23 WNT training camp was used to help head coach Bill Irwin pick an 18-player squad for the Four Nations Tournament 2010 taking place in Leicester, England from July 7-12. That competition will serve as the team's end-of-the-year tournament before the players head off to their college pre-season camps.
In the classroom, Shipley was named to the 2009 NSCAA/adidas Women's College Scholar All-America second team, in addition to being selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District second team and the Academic All-Big 12 first team.
Four other current Aggies are members of the 2010 U-23 WNT Player Pool, including Kristin Arnold, Whitney Hooper, Alyssa Mautz and Bri Young.
These five players and the rest of the 2010 Texas A&M soccer team kick off their 2010 season with an exhibition match against Rice on Aug. 14 at the Aggie Soccer Stadium.
