LINCOLN, Neb. - Texas A&M junior Bri Young scored the game-winning goal in the 71st minute to lift the No. 5 Aggie soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Nebraska on a sunny Sunday afternoon at the Nebraska Soccer Field.
Young's (Castle Pines North, Colo.) third goal of the season came in the 71st minute off of a free kick from 45 yards and helped improve A&M to 8-3 overall and 1-1 in the Big 12. It also snapped the Huskers' (8-3, 1-1 Big 12) 18-game home winning streak. Nebraska had not lost a match at home since Oct. 17, 2008.
"I'm proud of the players," said head coach G Guerrieri. "Our effort from opening kickoff right through was a lot better than what we saw in the match Friday night. Bri is just special and does so many things for us - defensively, building our attack and finishing great chances.
"A great part of our win today was Wally Crittenden (Texas A&M volunteer assistant coach). He did great job helping us with scouting information and setting up a game plan. He deserves a lot of special attention for his great contributions. He's been a fantastic addition to our staff."
The Aggies got on the scoreboard with their first shot just over 10 minutes into the match. Redshirt sophomore Beth West put the ball at the feet of senior Alyssa Mautz and after a short dribble she cracked a shot from 30 yards that went off goalkeeper Emma Stevens' hands and over the line for her eighth goal of the season.
Three minutes later, however, Morgan Marlborough answered on a free kick and put the ball over A&M's wall and inside the near post from 20 yards. Her 10th goal of the year leads the Big 12.
In the 17th minute, Young nearly put the Aggies back up by a tally when her free kick from 25 yards was deflected off the crossbar with a high hand from Stevens.
Senior Rachel Shipley then found a wide open Mautz across the penalty area in the 30th minute. In a 1v1 opportunity, Mautz chipped a shot from the far side of the 18 that went over the keeper, but off the top of the crossbar.
With just over four minutes remaining in the half and in a race for the ball on the left flank, Stevens took Mautz down hard 35 yards out of goal and was immediately given a red card. Senior Amber Gnatzig headed in the subsequent free kick from Young, but the goal was disallowed because of an offside call.
Early in the second half, Marlborough snuck behind the Aggie defense and dished off to Jordan Jackson whose sliding shot sailed high of the goal.
The Aggies controlled much of the possession in the half and in the 70th minute, Mautz took the ball away from a Nebraska player and pushed it up to Gnatzig. Gnatzig made a run up the middle but her shot from 10 yards was blocked by a closing Nebraska defender.
