Wen, Sanchez-Quintanar Notch Ranked Wins in Semifinals
Oct 16, 2011 | Women's Tennis
Both Aggies dropped their first sets but come back to win the next two to create an all-A&M final. The championship match was not contested between the two teammates.
No. 2 seed Sanchez-Quintanar advanced to the final by knocking off top seeded and No. 10-ranked Marta Lesniak of SMU, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. Sanchez-Quintanar finished the tournament 4-0 and extended her overall winning streak to six.
"Cristina changed her game after the first set and took Lesniak out of her game and out of her rhythm," A&M assistant coach Mark Weaver said. "Cristina then completed controlled the second and third sets. It was very impressive."
Wen, who was unseeded, also finished the tournament 4-0, including three wins against seeded opponents. After topping the No. 4 and 7 seeds yesterday to advance to the semifinals, Wen battled back to defeat No. 3 seed and 28th-ranked Diana Nakic of Baylor, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5, and advance to the finals.
"Sun was already tired after a three and a half hour match yesterday, but somehow she found a way to come back today in another three and a half hour match against a girl who never missed," Weaver said. "Sun practically had to hit a winner just to get a point, and she showed one of the best fights I've ever seen. She gave tremendous effort and proved that she can compete at a high level."
A&M's run in doubles came to an end in the semifinal round as Sheri Olivier and Lauren Santacroce fell to No. 4 seed eventual champion Federica Denti and Kelsey Sundaram of TCU, 8-6.
"Sheri and Lauren were competing together for the first time in four years and showed promising results," Weaver added. "They gained confidence after beating the No. 1 seed earlier in the tournament, but today they had chances to break early but were unable to come up with the big shots."
Next up for the Aggies is the ITA Regional Championships at TCU in Fort Worth. The singles and doubles championships of the regional, along with the champions of the 11 other regional sites will receive an automatic berth to the UTSA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, to be held Nov. 3-6, at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
