SEATTLE, WA - The No. 9 seed Texas A&M men's tennis team took the momentum of winning the doubles point to race to a 4-1 victory over No. 13 seed Texas Tech at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships held in Seattle late Sunday night.
"I thought we played our best doubles tonight in the tournament and that positive energy carried over into singles where we had three straight set wins," Aggie head coach Steve Denton said. "Grig (Alexey Grigorov) was first off at No. 4 and Jeff (Dadamo) had his best singles performance of the tournament and soon thereafter (Alberto) Bautista clinched the match at No. 6. It was a race between Bautista and (Colin) Hoover to see who would clinch the match with Hoover leading 5-1 when the match was called."
To win the doubles point, the All-American duo of seniors Austin Krajicek and Jeff Dadamo got things started with an 8-2 win at the No. 1 line and freshman Junior Ore and senior Alexey Grigorov clinched the point with an 8-3 win at the No. 2 line. At the No. 3, Colin Hoover and Alberto Bautista were in good shape leading 5-3 when the doubles point was awarded.
It was important for A&M to bounce back after a couple of tough losses earlier in the tournament.
"We have done a lot of soul searching over the past couple of days and I thought it was very important for this team come out with energy and play well tonight against one of our Big 12 rivals," Denton explained. "Every team in this tournament will be in the NCAA tournament and it was important for us to not come home empty handed."
The win improves the Aggies' record to 6-3 on the season while Texas Tech falls to 6-4. A&M will return to College Station on Monday before hitting the road for a Wednesday, Feb. 23 match against TCU in Fort Worth. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
