COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Led by senior All-American and captain Austin Krajicek, the No. 6-ranked Texas A&M men's tennis team completed a doubleheader non-conference sweep on Wednesday at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center by beating UT-Pan American and No. 35-ranked Tulsa by identical 6-1 scores. The two wins improve the Aggies' record to 23-4 on the season and continues the home match winning streak running the record-breaking total to 33 straight home matches. Tulsa, who leads Conference USA, falls to 15-7 while Pan American is 1-11.
"This Tulsa match was a lot closer than the final score would indicate," assistant coach Bob McKinley said. "This was a close match and could have gone either way. We were very proud of the way the guys kept fighting and battling and we were able to win most of them tonight. It's hard when you have a couple of courts get way behind, but the guys kept battling like (Colin) Hoover in his match, he came back and had a chance to win that second set after being down. Niall (Angus) was way behind in the match down a set and down in the second set but he kept focused and just kept winning a point at a time and was able to come all the way back to get the win. That is what is really impressive about this team is the fight they have to win every point. Alberto (Bautista) has been struggling a bit recently and he played well and got the job done tonight."
The Aggies won the doubles point at Alberto Bautista and Colin Hoover were the first doubles team off the court with an 8-3 win at the No. 3 doubles and then at No. 1 doubles, the tandem of Austin Krajicek and Jeff Dadamo won, 8-6 to clinch the point. Alexey Grigorov and Junior Ore completed the sweep in doubles with an 8-4 win at the No. 2 doubles.
In singles play, Krajicek, ranked No. 21, was first off with an impressive straight sets victory over No. 28 Marcelo Arevalo, 6-2, 6-3. Bautista's straight sets win (6-4, 7-5) at No. 5 came just moments later to move the score to 3-0 in favor of the Aggies.
Tulsa would pick up its only point of the night at the No. 4 line where No. 86 Ashley Watling defeated Colin Hoover, 6-1, 7-6 (9-7).
Senior Alexey Grigorov would clinch the match for A&M with a close straight set match, 6-4, 7-5.
Earlier in the day, A&M defeated UT-Pan American as John Lewis, Niall Angus, Daniel Brown and Kayvon Karimi all had straight sets victories in singles action to lead A&M to the 6-1 win.
