COLLEGE STATION, Texas - After falling behind by a run in the top of the first, the No. 11 Texas A&M baseball team scored five unanswered runs to completed a sweep of visiting Nebraska with a 5-1 victory over the Cornhuskers Sunday at Olsen Field.
Texas A&M heads into the final week of the regular season with a 36-16 overall record and holds a one-game lead over rival Texas in the Big 12 standings with an 18-6 league mark. Texas A&M and Texas square off in a three-game series next weekend, beginning Thursday night in College Station before the scene shifts to Austin for the final two games.
Nebraska, meanwhile, fell to 28-24 on the year and 7-16 in conference play.
"It would have been easy to come out here and pat ourselves on the back, but we didn't do that," Texas A&M head coach Rob Childress said. "We came out and played well and had a big day getting runners into scoring position. It wasn't as big as the last two days as far as getting big hits, but we got enough and that's what matters. Derrick Hadley gave us a good start. We made a couple mistakes behind him but he got us into the fifth and we were able to make some great defensive plays late in the game. Brandon Parrent came in and did a real nice job for us."
Hadley, a freshman right-hander, got the nod on the mound for his third start of the season and the Navasota, Texas, native kept the Aggies in the contest by yielding just one unearned run in 4.1 innings of work.
After Nebraska scored during the top of the first, Texas A&M struck back in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at 1-1. Sophomore outfielder Tyler Naquin walked on four pitches to lead off the game and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice by freshman outfielder Krey Bratsen. Naquin was able to come home to score during the next at bat on a RBI fielder's choice.
The free pass to Naquin would become a theme on the day as the Aggie right fielder was issued four walks and struck out in his lone official at bat during the bottom of the eighth to snap his career-best 27-game hitting streak. The run fell just one game short of the school record set by R.J. Englert in 1972.
"There is a little bit of mixed emotions getting the hitting streak up to 27 games and knowing that the record was 28 way back in 1972," Naquin said. "But that's the way baseball goes and I get the chance to start another one on Tuesday."
Naquin drew four-pitch walks in the first and second innings before being walked intentionally in the fourth and drawing a five-pitch free pass in the sixth. He finished 0-for-1 with two runs scored in the contest.
"It is disappointing but everything was set up for that intentional walk, I would have walked him too," Childress added. "Four walks and his hitting streak comes to an end, but hopefully he can start a new one on Tuesday. There's no doubt he is going to continue to be a productive guy at the top of our line-up."
Texas A&M took its first lead of the afternoon on an RBI infield single off the bat of Bratsen during the bottom of the second, giving them a 2-1 lead.
Sophomore lefty Brandon Parrent (2-4) entered the game in relief of Hadley during the fifth inning and provided a boost for the Aggies. The Flower Mound, Texas, native shutout the Huskers for the game's final 4.2 innings, striking out five and walking only one to pick up the win.
Three more runs came in to score in the home half of the sixth as the Aggies took control of the contest. Senior shortstop Kenny Jackson led off the inning with a walk and was quickly joined on base by senior second baseman Andrew Collazo who singled through the left side of the infield. Naquin loaded the bases as he drew a walk after first base was left open following a wild pitch that moved both runners up a bag.
A passed ball scored the first run of the inning and Bratsen was able to plate his second RBI of the day with a run-scoring ground out. Junior third baseman Matt Juengel pushed across the final run of the frame with a sac fly to right field.
Texas A&M baseball is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts UT Arlington at Olsen Field in a 6:35 p.m. contest.
