COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Senior catcher Kevin Gonzalez plated the evening's only run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh as the No. 11 Texas A&M baseball team shutout UT Arlington 1-0 on Tuesday night at Olsen Field.
"It was important for us to play that game where there was pressure on us for all nine innings," Texas A&M head coach Rob Childress said. "We swung the bats well tonight, we just didn't have anything to show for it. The balls we did hit hard were right at them and they made the plays. Mendoza didn't have great command but he found a way to get us through four innings and our bullpen couldn't have done a better job."
Early in the contest the defenses for both teams ensured the game would remain scoreless with the Aggies able to turn inning-ending double plays in the first, fourth and fifth innings. The Mavericks countered with twin-killings of their own to end Texas A&M's turn at bat during the first and second frames.
"When you pitch and play defense you are going to be in every game," Childress added. "The offense is going to go up and down. Tonight, if we hit them where they're not we might score seven or eight runs but we didn't, we hit them where they were. We pitched and played defense and Kenny (Jackson) was outstanding at shortstop. I've very proud of some of our pitchers who hadn't pitched in a while but came in and did what they needed to do for us to win."
Junior third baseman Matt Juengel began the home half of the seventh with a double off the wall in left field and first baseman Jacob House drew a walk in the next at bat to give the Aggies a pair of base runners.
Following a sacrifice by pinch hitter Scott Arthur, Gonzalez made sure the Aggies would not let their best scoring opportunity fall by the wayside. The Houston native drove a 1-0 pitch in the air to center field allowing Juengel to tag up and score from third for Gonzalez's 17th RBI of the season.
Texas A&M starter Dylan Mendoza tossed the first four innings on the mound and was the benefactor of a pair double plays turned by the Aggie defense behind him.
Relievers Steve Martin, Estevan Uriegas, Joaquin Hinojosa, Kyle Martin and Nick Fleece each contributed scoreless appearances to help the Aggies complete their fourth shutout victory of the season.
Hinojosa (2-1) picked up the win while Fleece earned his second save of the season with a shutdown ninth inning.
Junior Michael Morales (2-1) was saddled with the loss for the Mavericks, who fell to 25-28 with the loss.
The Aggies (37-16, 18-6 Big 12) are back in action this weekend when they take on rival No. 4 Texas (38-12, 17-7 Big 12) with the Big 12 regular season title on the line. The opener of the three-game series is set for Olsen Field on Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. before the scene shifts to Austin's UFCU Disch-Faulk Field for Friday and Saturday's contests.
