Jun 26, 2011 | Soccer
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Texas A&M soccer team was the recipient of its third-consecutive Aggie Cup award, given annually by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). The 20 different athletic teams at A&M are judged in five disciplines: personal development, athletics, academics, career and community service.
Student-athletes received points toward their team totals for attending academics, career and personal development-based workshops, as well as for community involvement and for supporting fellow Aggies at athletic events. The competition began on June 1, 2010 and ran through the academic school year.
The Aggie soccer team finished first, for the third time in as many years, with 5,122 points. Women's basketball came in second, followed by softball.
"The Aggie Cup is a competition among all of the ultra-competitive student athletes at A&M," head coach G Guerrieri said. "The lessons our ladies learn while taking part in all aspects of the year long Aggie Cup competition really are a valuable part of our girls' college experience."
A&M soccer has shown avid involvement on campus and in the Bryan-College Station area for many years. Recent community projects includes volunteering with Nothing but Nets, Hard Hats for Little Heads, raised money for cancer research in Relay for Life, and also conducted numerous free youth soccer clinics around the Brazos Valley and across the country and Relay for Life.
"We are very proud of our student-athletes," Guerrieri said. "We consider winning the Aggie Cup as achieving part of our mission statement of Building Champions."
