FRANKLIN, TENN. - The 16th-ranked Texas A&M women's golf team closed with the best round of the day on Sunday to finish tied for fifth at the Mason Rudolph Fall Preview at Vanderbilt's Legends Club.
Sophomore Natalie Reeves fired a five-under-par 67 to lead the Aggies to a team score of two-over 290. A&M jumped from being tied for ninth yesterday into its first top-5 finish of the season in a field that included the top teams in the nation. A&M finished with an overall team score of 886 (303-293-290).
"It was a great day for Aggie women's golf," A&M head coach Trelle McCombs said. "I'm very proud of these girls and the way they keep their composure and fought their way back into the top five. Natalie played awesome all day. I've been waiting to see her break through. Her 67 really could have been 64, but she missed a couple 3-footers for birdie. It was really fun to watch her today."
Reeves' final round began on the first hole and she birdied the second, third and fourth holes before a bogey on the sixth, but got the stroke back with a four on the par five seventh to turn three under. The Euless, Texas, native added birdies on the 11th and 15th holes to finish five under on the day, the lowest round of her career. Reeves tied for 30th (224) at the tournament.
Junior transfer Mary Michael Maggio turned in another even-par 72 and garnered her first top 10 finish as an Aggie. From Conway, Ark., Maggio finished in seventh place with a 217 (72-73-72).
"Mary Michael played another solid round for us," McCombs added. "She is a great addition to our team."
Sophomore Katerina Ruzickova tied for 26th with a 223 (74-72-77), junior Aly Smith tied for 43rd with a 227 (80-73-74) and junior Susy Grunden finished tied for 80th with a 238 (77-80-81).
"Aly had a great day today also," said McCombs. "She learned a lot out there as she really didn't hit the ball all that well. Her short game and putting really saved her."
Top-ranked UCLA won the team title after shooting 873, six shots better than No. 3 Alabama with 879. Arizona State and Virginia finished tied for third with 884 and North Carolina matched A&M's score of 886 to tie for fifth.
The Aggies return to action October 16-18 at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic in Norman, Okla.
