Tennis Extends Winning Streak; Defeats ISU 6-1

The Aggies, who end their Big 12 Conference series against the Cyclones with a perfect 16-0 record, improve to 11-1 overall and 2-0 in the league. ISU falls to 3-12, 0-2.
"Anytime you are playing away from home, it is a challenge," A&M first-year head coach said. "This is starting to sound like a broken record, but our girls played well."
A&M swept the doubles matches to win its 11th consecutive doubles point. Sheri Olivier and Lauren Santacroce were first off the court and improved to 10-1after defeating Marie-Christine Chartier and Tessa Lang, 8-3, at the No. 3 line.
Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar and Wen Sun cruised to an 8-0 victory over Maria Macedo and Ksenia Pronina at the No. 1 court to clinch the point, and Janelle Cuthbertson and Nazari Urbina picked up their ninth consecutive win with an 8-3 victory over Jenna Langhorst and Simona Cacciuttolo, 8-3, at No. 2 to complete the doubles sweep.
In singles, Sanchez-Quintanar got an easy win at the top of the lineup and improved to 12-0 in dual matches after Macedo retired trailing, 5-0, in the first set. Urbina then put the Aggies up, 3-0, by defeating Pronina, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 2 line. It was the eighth consecutive victory for Urbina, who improves to 10-2.
Santacroce clinched the decisive point, putting A&M ahead, 4-0, with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Meghan Cassens, 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 4 line. Freshman Janine Erasmus kept the Cyclones off the board with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Langhorst at No. 5.
Sun then topped Cacciuttolo, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 3 to put A&M up, 6-0. Chartier scored the Cyclones' only point, defeating Olivier, 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 (7), to close out the match.
"In doubles, we were aggressive and got on top early," Joffe said. "In singles, Christina's opponent got hurt, but all the other matches were hard fought by us. Iowa State played quite well. Our team is stronger, yet we definitely played well to make the scores look uncomplicated."
The Aggies do not have another match until Friday, March 30,
when they play host to No. 67 Kansas State. First serve will be at 6 p.m. at
the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
"It can be a disadvantage to have a gap in the schedule, but it also can be an
advantage," Joffe said. "We will spend a week practicing very hard to improve
in some areas so when the final stretch of the season comes along we will play
better. What we lose in competition, we gain in improving our skills.
"Our confidence now guarantees nothing. Our hope is to continue to improve and play well. We expect the matches to be difficult."
