Aggies Fall in Black Bracket Final
Apr 06, 2014 | Women's Golf
ATHENS, Georgia – The Texas A&M women's golf team suffered their only match-play defeat of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in the finals of the Black Bracket to Michigan State. Southern Cal emerged victorious from the Red Bracket to claim the team title at the 42nd edition of the prestigious event.
“We did not start the day off very well but we showed toughness and determination down the stretch,” head coach Trelle McCombs said. “I believe we learned that from not finishing well on Friday; that taught us a lot.”
The maroon and white faced a tough match-up against 24th-ranked Michigan State. The Aggies fell behind in all five matched early in the round and fought to get back into the match. Senior Natalie Reeves claimed the only victory for A&M 3-and-1 over Trisha Witherby. Fellow senior Chelsea Mocio halved her match against Christine Meier after carding birdies on holes 15 and 16 to square up the match.
“We are looking forward to the SEC championship because we know we can compete if we remember everything we have learned up to this point in the season,” McCombs said. “Looking forward to a great week of practice.”
Texas A&M will return to action for the SEC Championships in Hoover, Alabama beginning Friday April 18. Stay tuned to AggieAthletics.com and follow @AggieWomensGolf on Twitter for coverage of Texas A&M women's golf.
