A&M Doubles Team Comes Up Short in Championship Match
Oct 26, 2015 | Women's Tennis
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M's Rutuja Bhosale and Anna Mamalat finished runner-up in doubles at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional after falling to Texas Tech's Lynn Kiro and Alexandra Valenstein, 6-4, in the championship match at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
The Aggie duo, which won five consecutive matches including a dominating 6-2 victory over TCU's Seda Arantekin and Caroline Wegner in the semifinal match earlier in the day to reach the finals, held a 4-2 lead against the Red Raiders before dropping four straight games to close out the match.
"We had our chances, up 4-2," A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "I felt like we were a little bit tentative at the 4-2 game. We hit some excellent returns and weren't quite aggressive enough at the net on some great returns, because early on we were really aggressive with returns and moving well at the net. I think we played a little timid at 4-2 off some opportunities to maybe close it out, so we just needed to be more aggressive at the net on the big points."
A&M's Saska Gavrilovska, ranked 31st in the ITA preseason singles rankings, fell to 42nd-ranked and defending champion Despoina Vogasari of Houston, 6-1, 7-5, in a singles semifinal match earlier in the day. Vogasari won six consecutive games to close out the first set. She then trailed Gavrilovska, 5-2, in the second set but won five straight games to win the match and advance to the championship match, where she fell to Breaunna Addison of Texas, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.
The singles and doubles champions advance to face other regional winners across the country at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 12-15, in Flushing, N.Y.
"Overall, I haven't quite tallied up the wins and the losses, but there is no doubt we had a lot in the wins column," Weaver said when asked to assess the entire tournament. "Even the matches we lost, I thought we fought hard, and a lot of those matches could have gone the other way with one point here, one point there. The few losses we had were probably decided by one or two of the no-add points.
"If anything we have all improved a lot. Conditioning has gotten a lot better and they are moving really well and competing hard. We just need to keep moving forward. I do feel like the new no-add scoring, we are just going to have to get a little bit mentally tougher, and that is only going to come by playing more matches in those type of situations so that we can play those bigger points a little bit better."
Next up for the Aggies is the SMU Blue and Red Challenge, Nov. 6-8, in Dallas.
