Rinderknech Falls at USTA/ITA National Indoors
Nov 13, 2015 | Men's Tennis
FLUSHING, New York – Texas A&M sophomore Arthur Rinderknech fell in the quarterfinals of the 2015 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, defeating Austin Smith of Georgia before falling to Andre Goransson of Cal Friday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY.
Rinderknech defeated No. 17 Smith in straight sets (6-3, 7-6(5)), winning his eighth straight match this fall, all in straight sets. The stringy right hander had not dropped a set in over a month, falling in three-sets to No. 8 Thai-Son Kwiatkowski of Virginia at the ITA All-American in Tulsa at the beginning of October.
In the quarterfinals, Rinderknech's 16-set winning streak came to an end to No. 22 Goransson, falling 6-2, 7-5. The Paris, France native finished the fall 13-2, including four wins over ranked opponents, his only two losses came to the No. 22 and No. 8 player in the country.
As the only tournament on the ITA calendar to showcase elite players from every level of college tennis, the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships serves as the culmination of the fall season. Hosted by Columbia University, this prestigious event features a 32-player singles draw and a 20-team doubles draw for men and women.
Gaining automatic entry into the tournament were champions from the USTA/ITA Division I Regional Championships held across the country in October, winners of the USTA/ITA National Small College Super Bowl, and the consolation champions, doubles finalists, men's singles quarterfinalists and women's singles semifinalists from the ITA Men's All-American Championships.

Post-Match Quotes
Steve Denton, Texas A&M Men's Tennis Head Coach
"Arthur has really raised his level this fall. He had another great performance this morning against a very good player in Austin Smith. He once again served and played the big points well, which has been his trademark as of late. Unfortunately, in his match this afternoon he got off to a slow start and just dug himself too big of a hole to recover. He came back from 5-2 in the second set to tie the score at 5-5, but couldn't capitalize on the momentum he had seized dropping his serve on a no-ad point that ultimately led to his undoing as Goransson served out the second set 7-5. Nonetheless, if Arthur can maintain this level and some other guys step up and play to their capability, the Aggies will put themselves in the position to have a very good spring season."

On his first match Friday…
"This morning against Austin I played a really good first set, then I played a little up and down in the second. He played better and I didn't continue to play solid like in the first set, but when I was down 5-3 in the second set I did a pretty good job, to raise my level and win the match in the tie breaker."
On his second match Friday…
"Andre played well tonight, I knew his game a little bit going into the match. During the match I tried to play another kind of game than mine, when I should just play my game, but credit to him and how he stayed solid through the match."
On his impressive Fall season…
"I think there is a lot of positive to take from the fall tournaments I played. I learned today that I have some points to work on but I was happy to compete like I did for my first fall in college tennis. I look forward to competing during the spring with my teammates."
