Aggies Open Season with Double Header

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 5 Texas A&M men's tennis team opens the 2016 season with a double header Sunday afternoon at the Mitchell Tennis Center against UTSA and Lamar. The Aggies and Roadrunners are set to face off at 12 p.m. followed by a 4 p.m. showdown against the Cardinals.
Texas A&M and UTSA faced off last season in College Station, the Aggies came away with a narrow 4-3 victory. Then-freshman AJ Catanzariti claimed the win for the maroon and white, winning 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in the last match standing over Yannick Junger on court two. The win pushed A&M's all-time record to 16-0 all-time against UTSA.
The Aggies and Cardinals last faced off in 2014 at Mitchell, the home-team came away 6-1 winners as juniors Max Lunkin and Frankie Colunga picked up wins in the match-up. Texas A&M is 10-0 all-time against Lamar.
The Aggies begin the spring campaign with a pair of ranked singles players; No. 5 Arthur Rinderknech and No. 29 Shane Vinsant. A season ago, the Aggies completed one of the most memorable seasons in program history; advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals for the second time, winning a share of the SEC regular season title, winning the SEC tournament and defeating the No. 1 team for the first time.
Rinderknech earned the highest initial spring ranking for an Aggie on record, additionally he is the highest-ranked player in the SEC. The sophomore turned in a 13-2 fall resume including four wins over ranked opponents, his only two losses this fall came to the currently ranked No. 2 and No. 3 ranked players.
Vinsant finished the fall season at 7-4 with a trio of wins over ranked opponents. The senior has earned All-SEC recognition each of the last two seasons, along with the 2014 SEC Tournament MVP honors. A season ago, Vinsant was named an All-American alongside classmate Harrison Adams after earning a final No. 10 ranking in the doubles poll.
The highest ranked A&M doubles team was Rinderknech and Vinsant at No. 12. The duo was 5-1 this fall with an impressive 2-1 mark against ranked pairs. Lunkin and sophomore Jordi Arconada earned their first doubles ranking of their career at No. 29. Lunkin and Arconada were 3-1 in the fall, going 1-1 against ranked pairs.
The Aggies continue play at the Mitchell Tennis Center next weekend hosting the ITA Kick-off Weekend as Boise State, San Francisco and Fresno State are set to compete for a place in the ITA National Indoor Championship.
