COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The No. 22 Texas A&M softball team (28-9, 7-5 SEC) opened the weekend series with a 1-0 win over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (13-24).
Senior Rachel Fox threw her 22nd complete game of the spring Friday night, fanning six batters and walking just one while allowing three hits in seven innings. Fox and the Aggie defense retired the Georgia Tech side in order in three innings.
Friday's game turned into a pitcher's duel early, with both teams leaving runners on base in multiple innings without scratching a run across.
The Aggies reached the bags in the second, fourth and fifth innings but never capitalized. Junior Cali Lanphear took a base on balls followed by a single up the middle from sophomore April Ryan in the second got the Aggies going in the second inning but both were stranded. Freshman Tori Vidales recorded her first hit of the night in the home portion of the fourth and freshman Ashley Walters found her way on after a fielder's choice but neither could round the bags towards home. A full count walk placed junior Breanna Dozier on first and a single past third base landed senior Brittany Clopton on base but, for the third time, the Aggies couldn't move any farther.
Fox and the Aggie defense played a tight game wire-to-wire, never allowing more than a single Yellow Jacket on base in a single inning.
With the game still tied at zero all heading into the home portion of the sixth, Vidales crushed the first pitch thrown her way over the left field wall for her tenth home run of the spring to give the Aggies a 1-0 lead. Lanphear followed by smoking a double all the way to the center field warning track, joined on the bases after freshman Kristen Cuyos battled her way to a walk. A passed ball moved both runners into scoring position but they were left on the bags to end the Aggie threat.
Holding the first lead of the game, Fox retired the last three Georgia Tech batters 1-2-3, making the play on the final out herself on a pop up to end the game.
Coach Evans Post Game Sound
“I thought we could have done a better job sticking to our game plan but I'm really happy that our kids could find a way to win. I thought Rachel Fox was terrific on the mound. She did such a good job and was in control all night. I thought our defense played well, Tori Vidales in particular. It was a pitcher's duel and a fun game to watch if you're a fan. A little nerve wracking but I'm happy they got the win.”
Let's Hear a Hullabaloo
…for doing it all. Freshman Tori Vidales played her best on defense, making several quick plays for five assists and scored the only run of the day with a solo shot over the left field wall in the sixth inning. Tonight's homer was the third baseman's team-leading tenth of the season. Gig 'em, Tori!
Coach Evans on Vidales:
“She is doing such a good job right now moving her feet, being quick and making plays in the 5-6 hole. Before some of those were getting through but they're not now. She's really buckled down and is doing a great job. To turn around had get that homer in the sixth was great.”
