#23 Aggies Get Win Number 30 Tuesday Night
Apr 07, 2015 | Softball
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The No. 22 Texas A&M softball team (30-10, 7-5 SEC) earned its thirtieth win of the year with a 5-2 victory over UTSA (26-12) on Tuesday Night.
Senior Rachel Fox started in the circle for the Aggies and had a dominating night, throwing ten strikes, one shy of her season high, and walking just one to go along with three hits.
The Aggies got started quick, with Fox and the defense retiring the UTSA side in order.
Senior Brittany Clopton and freshman Tori Vidales led off with back-to-back walks, before a fielder's choice from freshman Ashley Walters allowed the Roadrunners to catch Vidales out at second. With runners on the corners, junior Cali Lanphear drilled a single down the right field line and Clopton came home for the Aggies' first run of the day.
With a lead they would never surrender, A&M scored three more runs in the home portion of the first. Freshman Kristen Cuyos dropped a double in the left field hole to send Walters and Vidales home before a single from sophomore Reagan Boenker sent home the fourth and final run of the inning.
The Aggies would scratch another across in the bottom of the third, after a double all the way to the left field wall from designated player Celena Massey sent Cuyos rounding the bags.
Holding a 5-0 lead, neither team would score until the top of the sixth when a two RBI shot over the center field wall from the Roadrunners shrank the A&M lead to three.
Texas A&M went down in order in the bottom of the third and Fox sent the last three offerings from UTSA down in order to close out the game.
Coach Evans Post Game Sound
“I'll take it. We scrambled out there and found a way to win after scoring four in the first. I thought our kids looked good out there. We made the plays when it counted, I thought we did a good job defensively.”
Let's Hear a Hullabaloo
…for your best stuff. Senior Rachel Fox fanned ten batters on Tuesday, one shy of her season high, and only issued one walk in the 5-2 victory. Gig 'em, Rachel!
Coach Evans on Fox:
“She was terrific. She was in control all night, she got a bunch of strikeouts and got ahead of hitters. Aside from that walk, I was pleased with her tonight. She went out there and had great confidence and pitched her good stuff. For Rachel to do what she did shows you what kind of night she had, because their batting average is high and they're hitting homeruns against good teams.”
