Aggies to Compete in ITA Texas Regional in Waco

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M competes against many of the top collegiate women's tennis players in the state this weekend as the Aggies participate in the ITA Texas Regional Championships Presented by Oracle, Oct. 20-24, at Baylor's Hurd Tennis Center in Waco. Action gets underway Thursday with the opening round of doubles at 9 a.m. followed by two rounds of singles.
Singles and doubles championships are scheduled to be played Monday, with the winners advancing to face other regional winners across the country at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 3-6, in Flushing, N.Y.
"I am looking forward to seeing our entire roster compete in the regionals," Texas A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "The competition will be filled with a lot of very good players, and I feel that our group is well prepared for the challenge that lies in front of them.
"We account for five of the 16 singles seeds, and that really speaks to the strength of this year's team. In addition, Stefania Hristov, Eva Paalma and Domenica Gonzalez will competing in just the doubles portion and will be making their debut this fall as they have been nicely recovering from injuries which occurred last season."
The doubles team of Gonzalez and Paalma will be first to compete, taking on Denise Maxl and Kaja Ljubic of Stephen F. Austin, Thursday at 9 a.m. A&M's other three doubles teams, No. 3 seed Rachel Pierson and Rutuja Bhosale, No. 4 seed Saska Gavrilovska and Hristov, and Tina Bokhua and Macarena Olivares all received a first-round bye.
In singles, No. 1 seed Gavrilovska, No. 6 seed Pierson, No. 7 seed Bhosale, No. 12 seed Bokhua and No. 16 seed Olivares all received first-round byes. Mason Strickland opens singles play at 10:30 a.m. against Jordan Henry of Abilene Christian.
Other schools represented in the tournament are Baylor, Lamar, Rice, Sam Houston State, SMU, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, TCU, Texas, Texas State, Texas Tech, Incarnate Word, North Texas, UT-Arlington and UT-San Antonio.
