COLLEGE STATION – After opening the season with a win over Northwestern State on Friday, the Texas A&M men's basketball team is back in action on the hardwood at Reed Arena on Monday night when the Aggies host American University at 7 p.m.
Monday's game will be available digitally on mobile devices, tablets, PCs and connect-TVs for SEC Network subscribers whose cable/satellite packages allow access to SEC Network+ content through the WatchESPN app and SECSports.com. Additionally, radio coverage on the Aggie Sports Network can be heard locally in the Bryan/College Station area on WTAW 1620 AM.
The Aggies used a big second half to cruise to a 72-44 win over the Demons which featured a double-double from sophomore center Tyler Davis, who led the youthful Aggies' with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Overall, in the win Texas A&M saw 146 of the total 200 minutes of playing time in the game go to underclassmen.
Junior Tonny Trocha-Morelos contributed 11 points during the contest which featured nine Aggies with five or more points.
American, meanwhile, comes to Aggieland after falling short, 62-56, in a hard-fought road contest at Maryland Friday night. The Eagles featured three players in double-figure scoring and were lead in scoring by center Mark Gasperini, who scored 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting.
OPENING TIPS
• The Aggies gun for a second consecutive victory to start the 2016-17 campaign as they host American University on Monday night at Reed Arena.
• Texas A&M opened the new season with a 72-44 victory over Northwestern State Friday night at Reed Arena. The Aggies owned a 42-8 edge for points in the paint and put the game away with a 31-5 second-half run.
• Sophomore center Tyler Davis carded his third career double-double during the win over the Demons, collecting game highs in both points (16) and rebounds (10).
• Five Aggies made their Texas A&M debuts in the contest vs. Northwestern State – freshmen Chase Carlton, Caleb Smith, Robert Williams and Eric Vila as well as graduate senior transfer JC Hampton.
• Williams enjoyed an impressive opener, contributing six points and seven rebounds, but his most eye-popping stats was five blocked shots. It stood out as the first five-block game for an Aggie since Keith Davis accomplished the feat on Dec. 7, 2011, against Sam Houston State.
• Head coach Billy Kennedy collected his 100th career victory at Texas A&M during the win over Northwestern State, becoming only the second Aggie head coach to reach the century mark ... he joins Shelby Metcalf who won 438 games while roaming the Texas A&M hardwood from 1963-90.
• The Aggies are 137-13 (.913) all-time in non-conference games inside Reed Arena, which hosted its first basketball game in the fall of 1998.
SERIES HISTORY VS AMERICAN (FIRST MEETING)
• Mike Brennan has faced the Aggies twice as an assistant coach. The first meeting came as a volunteer assistant at Columbia in 1995 with the Aggies capturing a 65-39 victory. During the second matchup which came in December of 2002, Brennan, then a member of John Thompson's Princeton staff, helped the Tigers defeat A&M 76-62.
• American met an SEC program on Dec. 22 last season, falling 51-79 to LSU in Baton Rouge.
• The Aggies' most recent meeting with a Patriot League school came in December of 2012 as they defeated Army 67-59 inside Reed Arena.
KENNEDY HITS 100 WINS AT A&M
Aggie head coach Billy Kennedy has enjoyed successful coaching stops at Centenary (1997-99), Southeastern Louisiana (1999-05), Murray State (2006-11) and now Texas A&M (2011-).
The sixth-year Aggie coach eclipsed another coaching milestone as the season-opening win over Northwestern State gave him 100 victories for his tenure at Texas A&M. Only Shelby Metcalf, who guided the Aggies to 438 wins from 1963 to 1990, has claimed more victories while guiding the Texas A&M men's basketball program than Kennedy.
On Jan. 30 of last season, when the Aggies earned a 72-62 victory over No. 14 Iowa State, Kennedy hit another career milestone as he captured his 300th victory as a collegiate head coach.
REED ARENA SUCCESS
• The Aggies were 17-1 on their home court last year (1-0 this season) and are now 226-77 (.746) all-time in 18 seasons at Reed Arena ... the Aggies were 41-41 the first six years at Reed and are 185-36 since.
• In the last three seasons, Texas A&M is 49-8 (.860) on its home floor.
• A&M has won 94 of its last 110 home games against unranked opponents (38 of last 50 in league play).
• Texas A&M was 9-0 in non-conference games at Reed Arena last season (1-0 this season) ... the Aggies are 137-13 (.913) all-time in non-conference games inside the facility, which hosted its first basketball game in the fall of 1998 ... a loss to Rice on Dec. 22, 2011, snapped A&M's 67-game non-conference home win streak at Reed Arena (which dated back to the start of the 2005-06 season) and 80-game regular-season, non-conference home win streak (which dated back to 2003), both school records.
